I have a question.

I thought the perfect vodka was supposed to be odourless and flavourless. Have the tastes changed over time, and it's like water. What is the best vodka supposed to taste like?

I compare Ciroc to Absolute or Smirnoff -- good for mixing only.

Go for Russian Standard, a real steal for the price!!! Trust me!

Vodka is made in hours, while Scotch , Whiskey and Rum are stored & flavored over years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodka

Depending on the distillation method and the technique of the stillmaster, the final filtered and distilled vodka may have as much as 95-96% ethanol. As such, most vodka is diluted with water prior to bottling. This level of distillation is what truly separates a rye-based vodka (for example) from a rye whisky; while the whisky is generally only distilled down to its final alcohol content, vodka is distilled until it is almost totally pure alcohol and then cut with water to give it its final alcohol content and unique flavour, depending on the source of the water.[20]

I have not tried a taste test, but I suspect that the majority of the distinction between Vodka brands is Marketing
A hundred dollars for a premium brand of Vodka?
Dan Aykroyd was marketing his premium Vodka a year a go for $100 a bottle
A guess there is a sucker born every day

That's very true. Vodka isn't "aged", just filtered.

That said, I've tried taste-tested a super-premium vodka (Imperial) with premium (crystal, zubrova, gg) with a few colleagues and the moment we all tasted the super premium -- we all had the "A-ha" moment.

Was it a blind taste test?
ie. did you know ahead of time which brand was in a particular glass?

Boy, you're taking a risk quote Wiki. You know how some posters get all pissy about Wiki.

Sound s more like a Grappa or as noted in Wiki;

Cîroc vodka is a brand of distilled beverage manufactured in France. It is claimed by the drink's promoters that it distinguished from other vodkas by the fact that it is derived from grapes, in contrast to corn, sorghum, rye, wheat, or potatoes that are more commonly used. Because the base product is a fruit, it may be more properly described as an eau de vie, but is marketed as vodka instead.

I think they're using more as a convenient marketing gimmick than a true tag. How many people know what an Eau de Vie is, let along admit to buying/drinking one?

Ciroc is a way better product than Absolute or Smirnoff, no comparison. Has anyone tried TAG No. 5 from Oakville? Another excellent, reasonably priced vodka.

Correct, it is an eau de vie, technically not "vodka". With that said, it's a fine product IMHO. Been buying it in the US for the past 10 years or so.

Then it's more like a grappa if grape-based (I thought grappa was made from the vines too?).

When I was in the LCBO Friday night, the sales guy explained to me that vodka is one of the cheapest spirits to produce. Potatoes are cheap, and if there's no ageing, etc., well that's another saving.

Your typical grappa is moonshine, Ciroc is not. Vodka is cheap to make which is why it's reasonably priced in the US. However we get burned by the LCBO on that stuff. I prefer Tito's and TAG which are both made from corn and are very smooth.

The grappa I drink isn't moonshine (example, Nonino).

Yes, relatively cheap to make and they make a killing (LCBO or producers).

Rick Ross drinks and endorses it.

I don't think it can technically be called vodka because it is made from grapes. But it basically is vodka.

IMO best rye vodka comes from Russian, best potato from Poland and the best Bison Grass from Belarus!

Why is it 'basically' a vodka, when 'technically' is isn't?
