Simon just slashed Ryan Hollweg of the Rangers in the face. Got a match penalty for intent to injure & will be suspended.(maybe ten games?) Rangers score go ahead goal on the 5 min. powerplay. More shit publicity the NHL doesn't need right now.

nothing really that bad. no concussion or injury. Simon knew what he was doing- it's not like he's trying to take someone's eye out or give someone a career ending concussion or something. the player was back on the bench in minutes.

looks vicious but the act is overrated. no where near as dirty as Janssen's hit on Kaberle (which wasn't too dirty- except for it ending the season for Kaberle with a serious injury).

He knew what he was doing???? He swung the stick at his head!!!!
Regardless if the player was back on the bench...it was still intent...and he should be gone for the rest of the regular season.

So you're saying that because there was no injury, there should be no suspension??????

I just saw the play on TSN and it was a vicious swing to the head of Ryan Hollweg. I agree with The Bandit that he should be gone for the remainder of the season. But knowing the NHL they will probably give him between 5 and 8 games depending on prior acts.

Simon should know better

That is not the way he has played over his career.....tough yes, but that is cheap, dirty and displays complete disrespect for the game and the players in it.

I think 20..........it is worse in my mind that the Domi /Neidermeyer elbow is the playoffs.......

Funny this its on the Anniversary of the Moore incident ... Give or take a day ...
Yeah, it was the anniversary.

Simon's an idiot.

Given this happened to a New York Ranger, my guess is the NHL will wait to guage New York media's reaction to it before deciding the severity of the punishment.

He should be suspended for the rest of the year (playoffs included) without pay !! It's funny how these guys get suspended but still get paid, maybe if they took away their pay there would be less violence. Just because the other player wasn't seriously injured doesn't mean Simon shouldn't be suspended, last time I watched hockey swinging a stick and hitting another player in the face wasn't part of the game ! Another black eye for hockey !

I know as a former goon- that was done to send a message not to fuck with simon... there was no intent to cause serious injury. simon was slammed into the glass from behind seconds prior by Hollweg, another very dirty player.

has simon done this before, yes. and he's been punished many times in jr. for acts such as this.

he once broke a goalies neck for calling him a jigaboo.

i don't condone it, but i know where it came from.

Didn't Stafford try to chop him first?

Regardless of what lead to the incident, P's blow was vicious, and it was done with a weapon not just a fist or elbow (not that that should make much difference).

The optics are very bad. A story and picture are top-centre of the New York Times' website.

Ryan Hollweg is not well respected around the NHL- it was funny to hear guys on the Rangers sticking up for Simon, saying he's a good guy and well liked around the league.

makes me think how they feel about their own teammate, Hollweg. Personally, i think he's a weasel.

I saw Sean Avery stick up for Simon, who else on the Rangers did also?

The media is reporting that Simon has a concussion from his kiss of the glass. His hearing will be in NY because he can't fly right now.

i really don't know what to think. I like Chris Simon and know he is a respectable person. The act looked vicious and Simon could've been stunned from the bell ringing along the glass... in that regard, i think i woulda saw red everywhere i looked immediately following a hit like that also.

i'm with Oil on this one. it sounds rediculous on one side, but Ray Emery slammed 10x the amount of stick weight into a players face and only got 3 games for it... both incidents were acts of retaliation.

then you saw the TSN feed. on FSN it interviewed players from all around the nhl- it showed Shanahan, Ward, Avery, and Blair Betts among other nhlers Rob Blake, Todd Bertuzzi, etc. all share their likeness for Simon. i'm trying to look for a feed for you right now.

Chris Simon, angel that he is, has only been suspended 6 times in his career. I guess he's misunderstood.

if he still fought regularly he'd be the toughest in the league, no doubt. though he can't after having triple reconstructive shoulder surgery.

he is no angel. like i said earlier, he broke a goalie's neck for calling him a jigaboo in the OHL while he played for the Soo Greyhounds, ironically- for Ted Nolan as coach.

Interesting thing I saw...

...(I'll vote for the Perezhogin hack)...

......kinda ironic, that after all the whining from Leaf fans about how gutless the Leafs were not to challenge Jannsen..that a team as supposedly tough as the "Broad Street Bullies"..had no response to Chelios after he laid out Propp..the best response they got was from a goalie on the other side of the glass..

....Any excuses made for these stick swinging incidents are totally lame...using a stick as a weapon to attack someone is as gutless as it gets..I don't care how much a "weasel" the recipient is..and the hell with this "reconstructive surgury" copout... Simon was gutless and balless to use his stick..the season and playoffs if the NYI make it would be suitable punishment...
