This is just as bad as Marty McSorely's stick against Brashear a few years back - he should be gone for the season to set the tone - this kind of outburst is totally stupid and uncalled for.

if he still fought regularly he'd be the toughest in the league, no doubt. though he can't after having triple reconstructive shoulder surgery.

he is no angel. like i said earlier, he broke a goalie's neck for calling him a jigaboo in the OHL while he played for the Soo Greyhounds, ironically- for Ted Nolan as coach.
Who was the goalie? What team was he from and who called who that name? I follow junior hockey a lot and can't seem to remember that happening? Would have been early 1990's and the incident just escapes me.

Just came down - 22 games. 15 regular season plus 7 playoff (if they make it). Never heard if the 7 are added to next season if they miss the playoff.

i'll look it up, but i think the goalie's last name might have been Hunter...

it's a bit of a blur. might've been a Spitfire goalie.

****

Todd Hunter, G, Windsor Spitfires... 1990-1992.
happened in the 91-92 season.

simon also got a 20 game suspension that year.

it was the year before i came into the league. i played tier II in Espanola of all places that year...

Espanola ? Thats like playing JR C in Southern Ontario (joking). I use to know Chris very well when he was with the Nordiques (I was living in Quebec) I went to see the dancers with him more than once in his beat up Ford Bronco and I can tell you this much. Off the Ice he was a great guy.

Dam I cannot recall that happening. I have to dig deeper into my sources to track that down. I would love to know the story on that. So you played for Espanola then NM Royals? Gee, that puzzle is too easy for an old rink rat like me to figure out. So tell me, wtf happened to Jason Bonsignore? The guy has tons of talent but went no where. We used to shake our heads when he played in the AHL with Hamilton. Some nights he would be brilliant, other nights we'd boo him off the ice. Then there is Ryan VandenBussche. Kypreos sure remembers him. :p

I am watching sportsnet and they have mentioned 0 about the suspension..
Are you sure ??
It has been on the radio all day. Been working from home and I heard this several hours ago. So I have the scoop on Sportsnet, great. I even beat you to the story and that is really something to brag about. :p

NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell met with New York Islanders forward Chris Simon and team representatives Saturday morning, but made no immediate decision on a suspension.

Earlier today, TSN.ca posted a story stating that Simon had been suspended for 15 regular season games and seven playoff games, an inaccurate report that should have been attributed to Madison Square Garden Network. TSN regrets any inconvenience this may have caused
Yah I just saw that on TSN.ca. Dam I can't even rely on my sources anymore. Send a dam boy to do a man's job and this is the shit you get. :p

I think the league is sending the message that this kind of behaviour won't be tolerated. Of all the tough guys out there Chris Simon is one of my favourites because he has some skills other than fighting. However, this was a brutal incident and he should pay. Even though this Hollweg guy is an idiot Simon should have dropped the gloves and pounded him instead of using the stick.

I think it is good the NHL is sending a message, though Emery's 3 games for doing something worse with a much heavier stick is a joke.

though some consistency would be nice.
I hate it how it is always the tough guys that get the short end of the stick when it comes to disciplinary actions.

This punishment may fare to be worse than the bertuzzi punishment shall the Islanders do good in the post season. And i don't think it was nearly as brutal of an attack.

yeah, i joke about it too. still the facts are great talent come out of both leagues. In the NOJHA i played against players like Steve Sullivan. Jason Arnott came from the Georgian Bay loop of Jr C among others...

the joke, i guess is if you are 20 yrs. old and still in JR C... but, then same goes for tier II of the OHA... the best you can hope for is a few years of Division II college, maybe move up to Div I if you're a late bloomer.

Bonesy? I can't tell you what happened. I do know that he didn't have the 'head' for a pro career.

Ryan VB was my welcoming to NewMarket. I was black and blue for the rest of training camp! lol... He was quite a fan fave and was in the Penguins system for a while until last summer when he got charges against him for assaulting some police officers.

I heard he was abused as a youngster which contributed to the attack. I really liked his apology except that most of the letter was trying to explain how it really wasn't him.....he was out of it....

Please... not unless his abuser also used a hockey stick across his head. Next people are going to say that Hollweg look like his abuser and that's why he did it.

Simon screwed up... but give him credit for admitting he was an idiot. Of course... if they had called Hollweg for a boarding penalty in the first place... this whole thing never would have happened.

...from the time of Hollweg's hit(which was not boarding) to when Simon force fed him his stick..it was a matter of seconds. There was no time to call this so called penalty, and in the frame of mind that Simon was,it would not have mattered

Apparently he's a free agent at the end of the season...so whoever signs him for next season might not have him for the first 10-11 games. (Although it looks like the Islanders will make the playoffs.)

Yes... and the fact that his face became part of the boards.

Swearing after being cut off is one thing... getting a golf club out of your trunk and hitting someone across the face is another thing completely.

What this guy did was unforgivable. He could have committed murder if the stick had landed on his victim's throat. I took a few karate classes in my younger days and still remember my instructor's repeated caution that "never hit on a guy's throat unless your own life is at jeopardy ...." This guy's stick is very close to his victom's throat which is the most fragile part of a human's body. The penalty he gets is too light, IMHO.
