I always wonder how little birds like that survive in the - zero winters with those little legs that are like little toothpicks.

YEP, going to put up the feeder any day know, including a suet basket, only in the winter though, to help them out.

Great to see, and feel good I'm helping them out, only down side, is hawks.

I made an effort to attract crows which seemed to help, but couldn't keep them around all winter.

Nice Dens
Can't understand why anyone would want to suet a bird? Would you have to hire a legal Eagle for the job?

I've got sunflower out for the birds, so far today there have been visits by a pair of cardinals, chickadees, sparrows, juncos, nuthatches along with some squirrels.
Plus, a few blue jays. When I see them on the trees, I'd go out and put out a handful of peanuts in shell on a tray. They will fly down and devour them in no time. I also have a feeder for nyjer seeds, and finches as well as chickadees just love them.

OH, chip monks, don't get me started, love em.

Have one that will go in my pocket, some sit on my shoulder, waiting for peanuts.

They know their name and what their food is called.

Couple of years back, had a female that would gently take peanuts from our hand, then got pregnant.

A while later, she brought her whole family of 6 babies to live in the larger boulders in our back yard, had to help some of them out of my pool, but never lost one.

The following spring, I noticed a chipmunk sitting on one of the boulders looking my way, didn't know which one it was, so I said my usual, "chippy", she stood up, then "peanut".

A short delay, and she came running towards me, actually singing, will never forget that event.

They may be cute, until you see them fight.

And the blue jays, sitting on the railing, looking at me through the window, waiting for peanuts, and a squirrel that knocks on the glass at the bottom of my back door, I kid you not, for the same thing.

Yep,... a sucker for wild life.

Yes, it's cold out but I'm enjoying the chickadees in my backyard. :) At least I think they are chickadees. They're hanging out with a beautiful cardinal.

There was even a song about Chickadees it went:

Chickadee, tell me what's wrong
You're enchained by your own sorrow
In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see that you're oh so sad, so quiet

Same place, obviously warmer times..lol

The chipmunks are everywhere. If wearing pants, they can run right up your leg and sit on your thigh. This is my absolute escape from things, and what brings me peace of mind.

aww
they are so small! I didn't think chipmunks were that tiny are they still babies? The squirrels that come around my place are at least twice as big.

If they look like this, it is a Black Capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus).

As Kathleen posted very, very friendly little birds and easy to get to come eat from your hand.

These little guys Boreal Chickadees (Poecile hudsonicus) don't come too close to the GGHS, but can be found in Algonquin Provincial Park

p.s. that is a really neat photograph of a Pileated Woodpecker in the link you have on #6

Great photograph Kathleen.

It is a shame that what I was told as a child that Chipmunk was a bastardization of an Algonquin word meaning "Little Friend" is so much hogwash. Because they truly are.

Of course another nice Southern Ontario "thing" are the the melanistic (black) Grey Squirels which really are much more dashing than the nominal colour phase.

We do what we can to feed the birds in winter. Unfortunately we have a Hawk who is in the area and has on occaision dived in and made a meal out of some of the little birds. Not a pretty sight.

A suet feeder will attract lots of birds in winter, especially woodpeckers. Get the pure suet cake, a suet cake with nuts or seeds in it will be eaten by the squirrels in no time. My cat loves to sit in the window and watch the birds on the feeders.
