I was speaking with a relative over the holiday who works for a CFL team. I asked her about the state of the CFL right now. I was told they don't think it will survive without Govt money. and it doesnt look like its coming anytime soon .It will fold but come back in a restructured form with players pay taking a big hit. If the League folds the CFLPA would be no more.

I've always been a big CFL fan so for me this is terrible news.

But maybe a new league in the future would fare better. They have been bailing for years now.

Adopting NFL rules and becoming a feeder league might be more viable. Of course that would mean abolishing the Canadian content rules. Which would signify a completely different identity.

I would prefer they reduce the Canadian player minimum and just take the best players available. Keep the current CFL rules.
If the league folds and tries to start up again will the same owners want to come back?. Might not find any owners if it folds.

Good. It should fold if it can't get its shit together. Folding will force some harsh introspection and changes. We can only hope this indeed happens and the league returns with a much better on-field product. If it can't/doesn't come back, no big whoop.

Having grown up in an era where players routinely jumped from the NFL to the CFL & vice-versa, I continued to follow the CFL & would alway take in a couple Argos games a year, especially since the move to the BMO filed as its a great place to see a game, so I'd be very sad to see the league fold as I can't imagine the Argos coming back, as the fan base is already so diminished.
As for the product, again having grown-up playing & watching Canadian football, I can honestly say I prefer the Canadian game (size of field & rules) to the American game.

The CFL may be bush league, but it is OUR bush league with a 100 years of history. It is distinctively Canadian with many memories for many people. To have zero regard for the history of the game just because one doesn't particularly care for the current product just doesn't seem right to me.

Not looking good for the CFL right now. Initial overtures to the Feds for about $50million in emergency funding to keep the league afloat were rejected. Trying to put on a brave face, league commish says there are still some untapped sources of government funding available. Sorry Randy...you're just kidding yourself. In COVID-19 pandemic mode, no government department or ministry is going to pony up the kind of cash necessary to save your ass when so many other people and important, economically critical businesses are on the ropes, or spinning down the bowl. Time to face the music....

They should look at a cancelled season as a huge opportunity to strategically change everything about the league and the on-field product, and come back next year with something more appealing. Use the time productively to evolve, or don't bother coming back at all. No one cares about what you offer today. If you change it substantially, then MAYBE...but that's a big MAYBE.

I STRONGLY feel that the CANADIAN Football League should have MORE Canadian players. Give these kids a chance to play at a higher level for a few years. There is some great talent out their in our Universities these days but sadly never get a chance because of the Import oops sorry ''International'' players (US) players coming north because they cant catch on with an NFL team.

I love CFL football and really missed it this summer. I also missed live-betting on CFL games.
However, I have to agree with the decision of the federal government to not provide financial assistance to the CFL in the middle of a pandemic, with many people experiencing economic uncertainty and hardship. The best path forward for the CFL is to undergo major restructuring and become a viable league in a post-COVID world for next year. It will be difficult, the CFL business model is driven by gate receipts and its not known if and when fans can safely return to the stadiums. That may not even happen until you have an effective vaccine and mass vaccinations.

This fuckn CFL is fuckn ridiculous. They want $20M from the government this year to help pay their players, employees and operating cost. Just fuck right off. The whole fuckn league does not worth $5M. Just fold the present league and restart with 90% Canadian players.
