Cell phones and privacy question ...

Hi guys,

On a couple of occasions, an SP called me back on my cell phone after missing my call. I am sure that those who are in serious relationships understand that this can be rather "inconvenient" sometimes. :)

Therefore, I am thinking of getting a dedicated cell phone for this hobby and would like to hear recommendations from those who have been doing this already.

Which plans/carriers would you recommend?
Do you need to provide your full name when activating a plan like this?

Any other tips/recommendations related to this issue?

Thanks,
H.

I've had a Telus pay as you go for many years. The minutes aren't terribly cheap but then again you're only required to top it up once a month with $10, and you can get a card at most corner stores. They go for about $60 at Walmart. As for your information, it's what you give them.

you can also just get a sim card. and swap it out when you want to use it in the same phone..

Most Pay as you go phones are locked and you cannot swap out the SIM card. I have had several and could not swap out the SIM card.

you can buy unlocked phones for dirt cheap.. or unlock codes for whatever phone you have. Unlock codes for any phone can be had sometimes for free or a couple bucks... check ebay for the pricing. just email them your imei (phone serial number) and the carrier the phone is locked to. and they'll provide you an unlock code.. means you can now swap out any sim into your phone.. wind/mobilicity don't count. they use a different frequency than rogers/bell/telus/fido/petro/bmo/ blah blah

I was suggesting unlocking your current phone.. and swap out the sim with the prepaid.

Petro-Canada offers this sim card to go with unlocked GSM phone...Sounds like I understand what I wrote. Wrong! But someone out there could explain... :)

Most of the pre-pay providers do this...they sell you a SIM card only that you can put until an unlocked phone then the phone becomes a pre-pay vs. a contract (assuming the card you are pulling out is a contract phone). Telus does this as does Petro Can (I find Telus to be the best prepaid provider as they show you every transaction on your Account when you login to their website, Bell totally sucks for this). As too2shy mentions...the phone needs to be unlocked, and as you mention...the phone needs to be GSM and not CDMA (most newer phones are GSM thouigh CDMA is still out there). Unlocking your exiting phone is easy enough to do with a code, or you can buy an unlocked phone online. If you do the latter be sure it is compatible with the pre-pay provider you have a SIM card for...On the Telus or Petro Can website you can verify the compatibility, again you will need the IMEI number for that verification.

7 eleven prepaid with any unlocked phone. Same as petro but the minutes dont expire for 1 year. Swap in the sim card or keep the extra phone at the office.

fucking shit fuck. SP txt'd me.. I'd given her my real number (then told her n/m delete that and use this other number.. she didn't delete it.. just msgs both), normally I have an app that has a privacy area. that puts all txts from a certain number into it.. never visible. but I'd just switched phones and hadn't set the app up.. FUCK.

my gf saw a txt from the sp as it popped up on my screen... she had the phone in HER hand.. so clearly had time with it. said rate. in call. hot italien girl and a street name.

This girl had txtd me yesterday, and I had tried to add her number to the privacy area. but the account needed to be reset .. so i was like fuck it.. I'll do it later.. well.... I explained it away as a friend from outta town.. who wanted to go eat.. but yea .. however much it appears she bought it.. it doesn't matter. because now. she'll have that seed of doubt.

I guess this is all it takes to fuck up a good thing.

Wow, bad news. U r right, seed of doubt planted and growing. Thing is, if she trusted you to begin with she wouldn't have messed with your phone. But is this hobby really a good thing? I sometimes wish I would get caught so I can ditch the SO and do as I please. All this inner turmoil of lying/story telling can't be healthy.

That's really unfortunate, too2shy! Glad that she bought the story despite all these information she saw.

OUCH!!!! Unacceptable behaviour from that SP. Holy fuck, over.

All goes to support that hobby phones are mandatory for us (and keep them out of sight - toss them into a tool box or with the car jack, somewhere the wife never looks. And if it does get found you can say "hey, look at that, I think that was my first cell phone; haven't seen it for years. Holy crap that's ancient. I don't even remember tossing it in here. I wonder if it still works?"

Also make sure that you wipe its memory as you go. No trace-backs.

She was holding the phone and my keys for me. Msg was sent as it was in her hand and popup came up. Another feature I normally disable but had just switched phones day before and hadn't gotten to all the settings.

Doesn't go through my phone usually, but I can expect it now, and pc. Fuck.

Long term gf, not ditching for the hobby lol. Just now need to apply abundance of caution.. Always worried about clothes smelling like sp or random hair.
Now all those things will carry weight.

Anyways as long as someone gets a little more cautious out of this its not for naught.

That really sucks. Definitely getting a separate cell phone.

I also find some of the new cell phone features not very user-friendly for this type of hobby. Pop-up feature when text comes in, visual voices-mail and other crap makes it difficult to maintain the privacy. I would expect that new gadgets go towards improving security and privacy, but obviously that's not the case.

Thanks for sharing too2shy. Hope everything goes well.
