Back in the mid to late 1980's Bobby Orr had an annual charity event at Maple Leaf Gardens, where you got to skate around the rink with him as a group. My late, older cousin and I attended one year. I took a copy of a Macleans magazine from 1965 with Orr on the cover as an Oshawa General, that I had bought at a collectibles show. As we skated around the rink Orr was constantly surrounded, mostly by young kids. I waited for the right moment and approached him to ask if he would sign the magazine. When I showed him the magazine he had a look of surprise on his face, as though he hadn't seen it for a while. He looked at it for a bit and held it up for all the kids to see. As he graciously signed the magazine, my cousin asked him if he would pose with me for a photo(old fashion camera, no cellphones back then). He kindly agreed, and as I stood next to him for the photo he put his arm around me like we were buddies for years(he didn't know me from Adam). Class act.
P.S. My cousin connected with a young women there for one of his extra marital affairs. In a way, we both scored that day.
