Hamas made the tactical decision that Israel would have the choice of either not acting, letting Hamas get a 'win' on the 7th or Israel would act against Hamas which could only result in civilian deaths which hamas also sees as a 'win'. This was widely admitted by Hamas leadership in interviews not long after the 7th.

Thankfully' Hamas' last minute changes didn't prevent a deal. As a side effect, Ben Gvir is threatening to leave the government which is a good thing.

Netanyahu knew the attack was coming and ordered troops away. The he ordered the Hannibal Directive which likely caused as much death that day as Hamas.

Then why would they take hostages? Fact is, Isreal were doing their very best to kill Hamas fighters, and they did not know where the hostages were being held other then that they were being held by Hamas fighters. Soooooooo even a not very clever person can deduce they had little concern about the hostages being killed by friendly fire.
