Colbert's show was reportedly losing $40 million per year.

Only a handful of effeminate Boomers were voluntarily consuming that trash.
THIS.

In addition:

100 million annual production costs, 200 staffers!, Colbert salary 15-20 million, steady ratings decline since 2018, he has little appeal to streamers so CBS can't even grab some revenue from Youtubers, etc.

All this and a 40 million annual loss...the guy should be grateful to CBS for keeping him around for so long lol. If he had any business savvy or self awareness he would have seen it coming.

Or he simply could've done a 180 and make fun of the other side (lot's of content actually) He was too cowardly to get cancelled by the left, so he got cancelled by his bosses instead...

Interesting read. That kind of explains why the right wing is so easy to fall for a Kool-Aid scam and conspiracy theory.

But not why can't they laugh. Laugh at the world, at themselves, understand sarcasm, producing sarcasm...
I think bitter and angry types will only laugh at things like those videos of people wiping out. Its a lack of empathy. Doctorow touches on it, but the rich's of this board are a prime example. Where rich knows he's not funny but by repeatedly trolling the board with El Risitas gifs feels like he is laughing at us instead of being mocked and belittled daily.

When left wingers constantly bitch about a democratically elected President it's called freedom of speech.
When the right speak out against draconian lockdowns and forced vaccine mandates it's called spreading misinformation.

Only if your model of democracy is Hungary.

Did Trump cheat his way to the WH twice? Nope. It's not Hungary... What was the result of the election in Gaza since Hamas took the reigns? There wasn't any. You keep failing on 3rd grade lessons.

boring

We've been over this repeatedly and you can't differentiate between what Hungary has become and where trump is taking the US.
Was Hitler elected democratically?

And? Same with Obama. He was also elected democratically. They held elections... Has Gaza had an election since Hamas won? You can't answer can you? Time for you to tiptoe on that question...keep dancing franky...

Obama was elected and left the country in better shape.
Hamas was democratically elected so the US/Israel backed a coup then Netanyahu decided its better to fund them to keep Palestinians separated.
Genocidal leaders Hitler and Netanyahu were also democratically elected.

The difference is you think that means letting trump or Netanyahu burn it all down is therefore fine.

Joe Biden left the US like a dirtbag was kicked out of his apartment and a homeless went in and lived in the apartment...

Now this is funny. It basically relies on the go fuck yourself punch line but the set-up, delivery, timing and element of surprise make it funny. And importantly, it doesn't rely on the silly repetition of the profanity.

Did you just wake up from a nap?
That is the exact clip I posted. lmao.

Yes, it is cruelty and teeth grinding masked as humour.
Like some of the standup jokes Bucktee posted in one of the threads by some right wing comedian a while ago.
It was a lame attempt at trying to be edgy by making race and trans jokes.
I do enjoy a good race or trans joke, but this was like bottom of the barrel stuff that he found super funny.

You can see the defeat in his face and the pain in his eyes...the cherry on top is that Tweet from Donnie...he already came out on top... They (Kimmel, Stewart, Colbert, Oliver the view) to trash Donnie on every turn...night in night out...Trump is now rubbing salt to the wound...

I think he did see it coming, but liberals can be more emotional and dismissive of reality.
Plus, all his late night "friends" came to his side and that only emboldened him.

One can only guess which late night hosts are losing money and on the chopping block. I'm kind of wondering if they think they are prestige TV and should not be concerned with economic imperatives. The only show that I would consider to be prestige TV is The Tonight Show on NBC, but that's showing my age and sentimentality.

That and his ego...a little success would make you feel untouchable...Not sure if Trump pressuring CBS is accurate or simply a threat of litigation every time these hosts push the envelop is what made the CBS brass made the decision...it's already a failing show, bleeding $$$ and then you have a host who rely on you to bail them out with settlement when they get sued (Trump loves to sue)...and apparently the POTUS also has a good team of lawyers...they really had no choice...he can bitch and moan all he wants...CBS just DOGED his show.

You sound happy that late night shows aren't making money.
Its the death of tv stations vs streaming, but I fail to see why you think this is good.

Its the Ray Cohn method, that gay mafia lawyer that taught trump everything he knows.
Spend more on lawyers and out sue everyone.

Works both ways.

The guy who says PP for the first time is funny. The guy who says PP the six millionth time is not funny.

Similarly go fuck yourself offers no nuance or surprise to be considered nothing more than derogatory profanity. Repetition also drives home the lack of humor rather than enhancing it.

That doesn't mean the target audience can't enjoy it. It just doesn't really qualify as humor.
Are you critiquing Stewart's specific implementation here? (Also weird, since that 24 minutes isn't just him saying "go fuck yourself" over and over. Not even remotely.)
Or the use of it in general.
Because yes, it absolutely can be humour.
And it isn't just "how often it is said". Comedians tell a joke about how the basis of comedy is repetition.
The audience finding it funny might be a clue that it is humour.

Wyatt, making proclamations about what is objectively humour is probably a bad idea.

Exactly, but I think you will agree the late night format will likely never be what it was in decades past. I guess I shouldn't say never. Perhaps out there is a breakout late night star that we don't know yet who can coalesce a large audience.
I really don't think it is a matter of a break out star.
The format itself isn't a great fit for the current media ecosystem.

Late night shows as they are now evolved out of the old network TV model.
Some version of "interview with comedy and a touch of variety show" will probably survive, but it won't likely be a flagship kind of thing worth millions anymore.

Internet Commentator Emily Jashinsky (Breaking Point) said Colbert was trying to work a microculture model on a macroculture format and budget. That's an interesting way to word it. So yeah, Colbert could be great again on Comedy Central within a smaller format and a smaller budget.
I think that's a good description, actually.
I think all shows based on a macroculture format and budget are at risk these days.
