My father-in-law has cataracts. He has put off getting lens replacement surgery and now he wants to get it done ASAP. Friends of his are driving to Texas in a month and he wants to go with them, and see better on the trip. If anyone knows about options in Toronto to get the surgery done quickly, I would appreciate some advice that I can pass on to him. Thanks.

I think most of us are well aware of wait times for surgical procedures in Toronto, and that is for life and death situations as opposed to wishing at the last moment to enjoy some scenery.

As SR alluded to, cash is king.

In a place far, far away
Also keep in mind the op's father in-law made a conscious effort to wait and now is in a hurry to get it done.

Correct you don't have to rely on OHIP, in fact you can opt out of OHIP entirely, go to the States, India, Cuba, etc. or wherever you desire to get any procedure done.

Visit here in emergency dept. They have the biggest Eye surgery dept.
My friend was able to get eye surgery here within weeks without any referral due to diabetes situation ..

The Department of Ophthalmology at UHN is named the Donald K. Johnson Eye Centre. As the largest ophthalmology centre in the country, we care for more than 55,000 outpatients and perform more than 4,000 surgeries each year.

I am aware you said Toronto, however, there is a private clinic in Lindsay, operated by Dr. David Lane.(I googled his name to find his site.) My optometrist recommended him to me, wait time negligible if you are having the procedure at his clinic. Hope this is of use to you and your parent.

I am certain there are quality establishments in Toronto.

However I just had it done at http://Burlingtonlaser.com They also have an office in Barrie.
These Offices are the an off-shoot of Windsor Laser Eye Institute http://WLEI.Com
I had LASIK done in Windor 15 years ago.

I am not selling so I will not quote any prices.

Two successful surgeries out two is good enough for me

Please call them, they are very friendly and have a comfortable style unlike a lot of offices in the health industry.

I've had both eyes done, 2 years apart and there was a wait time to get in. Had to make appointment to get eye measured for new lens ahead of surgery. He will be very lucky if he can get it done on short notice. You should never let something like cataracts wait.

Assuming you want to pay for something ohip would cover.

I know someone who went, was offered the big $$$ surgery in days. When he declined and said he was fine with ohip covered lenses they told him 6 months.

OHIP paid for my cataract surgery and would have paid for the measuring of the eye for the lens had I done the ultrasound measurement. I chose the laser measurement which cost $250 for both eyes.

My father had a cataract years ago... Mississauga doctor told him it was a 2 year wait... that was unacceptable, as he was still very active even though he was in his late 70s.
I found a doctor in Barrie and the procedure was over and done with in less than 2 months at RVH.
