Go check out a low budget film called "Owning Mahowney" with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Minnie Driver. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0285861/) Edit: he was great. She was terrible doing a "Canadian accent".
But it follows a trues story of a Canadian banker who gambled the bank's money becoming a whale. Slow burn but not bad.

Is that the clever guy who would abscond with interest account money that was a fraction of a cent?

Over enough accounts that is a large sum and he would fly to Atlatic city every weekend and give the money to casinos

He was caught by a casino who informed his workplace of his weekend escapades

There must be a law that forced the casino to squeal

Concerning whales, or anyone else, I believe it is a false notion anyone gets free perks.
In return for free rooms, private tables, free flights, escorts, meals, shows etc
they are forced to gamble a minimum amount so the stay is not free
and if the casino loses the 'free' perks brings the whales back

The do not fly you in for free so you can play golf

I went to the casino for the first time last year and had pretty good beginners luck. I would never go alone because I don’t even know how to play most table games 😂

Good thinking. Don't play if you don't know the rules and understand the games, or at least have a knowledgeable partner to guide you..

And don't play horrible odds no-thinking games like slot machines at all...

Seeing all the old grandmas glued to the slot machines kinda reminds me of how kids are glued to their iPads it’s kinda sad 😢

I'm indifferent to casinos. Of the rare times I've gone I expect to lose a certain amount of money. I prefer watching the people playing blackjack and how unbelievably bad some of them are  as well as roulette. I've played slot machines knowing my odds are lousy but as I said once I lose a certain amount then I'm done for the night. Only once did I win, were I pocketed my initial investment and played until I lost my winnings. That kept me amused for about an hour, then went to the bar had some drinks while I waited for some friends.

Update.. $500 turned into $650

Took 4 hours of ups and downs
Got bored of it pretty quick
If you walked ahead then you know you can at any time. It means when you choose to enjoy it you can, but it shouldn't become a problem.

It's tougher to walk when you're behind. Studies have shown people hate losing much more than they enjoy winning. So many will "chase their losses" hoping to get back to at least even.

You can't even trust government run lotteries.

From the New York Times:

Texas Lottery Director Resigns Amid Scrutiny of Rigged 2023 Draw
Investigators are looking into how bettors were allowed to guarantee themselves a $95 million jackpot win, as state leaders question whether the lottery should go on.

The executive director of the Texas State Lottery resigned abruptly on Monday.

The executive director of the Texas State Lottery resigned abruptly on Monday in the latest fallout from the agency’s decision in 2023 to help professional bettors in Europe purchase and print millions of its tickets and guarantee themselves a $95 million jackpot win.

The resignation of the official, Ryan Mindell, came amid doubts that the Texas lottery can survive the scandal. The Texas Rangers, a state law enforcement agency, and the Texas attorney general’s office have opened investigations into the 2023 draw, in which the European bettors worked with several American lottery ticket purchasing companies to buy nearly every ticket, at $1 each, in a Lotto Texas game that had 25.8 million possible combinations.

The lottery raises money for the state’s schools — providing about $2 billion last fiscal year — but recently some state leaders have suggested doing away with it altogether.
No reason was given for Mr. Mindell’s resignation, which the commission said in a statement was effective immediately on Monday. A spokesman declined to comment further.

The resignation came a day after The New York Times published video of the ticket printing operation and details of the agency’s shortcomings. That followed months of reporting by The Houston Chronicle and other outlets looking into the 2023 draw.

Earlier this month, the Texas House eliminated the lottery from its version of the state’s budget. In February, State Senators sharply questioned Mr. Mindell and others during hearings on the 2023 draw. Some suggested the lottery had been used to facilitate money laundering, though no evidence of such activity had emerged.

“Is buying $25 million of $1 tickets a sign of money laundering, yes or no?” Senator Paul Bettencourt asked Mr. Mindell during one exchange.
“I can’t answer that question,” Mr. Mindell said.
“Wow,” Mr. Bettencourt responded.

Mr. Mindell took over the commission last year after the resignation of the previous executive director, Gary Grief, who had been in charge at the time of the 2023 draw.

Lawmakers found that the commission, under Mr. Grief, assisted the professional bettors by expediting delivery of dozens of extra lottery terminals, used to buy and print tickets, to three American companies, Lottery.com, Luck Zone and Lottery Now. The extra machines enabled the companies to successfully print millions of number combinations during the 72-hour window between lottery draws, helping to ensure that they had the winner.

I’ve had some fun nights at casinos, but I never take more money than I’m ready to lose. For me, it’s all about the vibe, not making money.
Same here as someone who barely knows how to play the games. It’s all about rooting for my friends to get a big win and enjoying some cheap drinks lol

I was just having some drinks with a friend and he said that he went to the casino over the weekend and 81 close to $600 playing blackjack and roulette and he said the most nights he hits a nice profit
Either your friend is lying, card counting, or has just been very lucky. The casino always wins in the long run unless the rules are favorable to a good card counter and they're employing their card counting skills, which casinos tend not to look upon kindly.
So...don't ever go to a casino expecting to make a profit.

The sole exception to this rule is poker. The casino takes a rake, so they don't care about having an edge in poker games. You're simply playing against other players, so whether you win or lose in the long run depends on your skill. I don't do it often anymore, but when I do I track my performance. I'm up over $11K in 264 hours of table play since I began tracking over a decade and a half ago. Just be aware, that is not the norm. It's important to keep in mind that there are more losers than winners, due to the casino taking its cut.

If poker isn't your thing, you should go with the mindset of having fun, rather than making money, and should only gamble with an amount you're fine with losing. My favorite game, aside from poker, is craps. Unlike most casino games, where you win or lose on your own, in craps you often win or lose as a table, which means everyone is having a blast when a win streak is on. The atmosphere can be quite something. Just be aware, yes...you can win a lot of money very quickly at craps, but that also means you can lose a lot of money very quickly as well.

Funny thing about blackjack is that it's friendly to beginners, but also...can make for an unfriendly atmosphere. Since all players work off the same shoe of cards, the actions of a player affects every other player and the cards they receive. So if a player does non-optimal play, and it results in the entire table losing, things can get kind of nasty. I've seen it before quite a few times, one of which came to blows. So I'm always nervous taking someone with me to play blackjack when they're not already very familiar with the game.

Of course I've seen the same thing, but I know that each "next card" is random, and what another player does at the table, however silly it may be, can work out well for the rest of the table, as well as badly.

That said, it's probably not wise for unsophisticated players to take the end seat, as that's the one that gets the most blame when they, in an incorrect play, take the card that would have broken the dealer...

Yup. I'm always surprised at how few people realize that it works both ways. Someone playing incorrectly is just as likely to help the table as hurt it. But of course people notice it more when it hurts them.

I have been to Vegas casinos 3 times in the past and played holdem poker. Played $5 limit first time. Was up over 200 and 3 players left the table and were replaced by 2 players who never raised and rarely called any bets. I was told that these players worked for the casino and are called Shills and only play to fill the table to keep the table going. Best thing about Vegas casinos is that alcoholic drinks were free as long as you are gambling.

I've played tourneys in Vegas, but never a cash game. Had no idea shills were a thing, but seems like a winning proposition for players if they function as you're indicating. Unless they're working in cahoots somehow.
And yeah, I'm always surprised how free they are with drinks. There must be some massive losers to fund that amount of free liquor.
