Sorry, typical of people these days, a fool decides to leap a fence and jump on a float, loses his leg and what do they do? Blame it on lack of security....

Jesus, when we people own up to being responsible for their own actions?

I feel for the guy but he ain't a kid, he's 25! Maybe ahem a) he shouldn't have drank so much and b) maybe he shouldn't have hopped the fence?

DOH

(things like this piss me off to no end...)

Your sympathy is overwhelming. The boy is still sadated, he doesn't know he lost his leg. His family is hurt and angry; a natural reaction to a life changing tragedy. Reporters have a way of twisting words. One didn't even have to jump a fence to get on a float. There were entrance points. It's very sad that the accident happend.

Well, being hurt and angry is one thing, but who to blame for the incident?

The person who jumped over the fence......

As for sympathy? You're right, I don't...he fucked up and paid the price...just like everyone else in the world that tries to do something stupid and fails....

He's NOT a boy btw, he's 25.......and should have known better.

There shouldn't be a need for any barricades.

I can imagine the outcry if we doubled the police presence at Caribana.

You do something you're not supposed to and you get into trouble. That's his fault and he paid the price. End of story...

oh frig, I just noticed it was you posting, gotta have another coffee; I forgot you don't fuck up, you are perfect in every way.

What a price to pay for wanting to jump up. That is one of my biggest fears during the caribana. Last Saturday I was sitting there watching it, as hundreds of people were swormed around a truck and I wondered how they all managed to stay safe.

Shoulda coulda woulda is not bringing his leg back, but I bet next year there will be new rules and people will be more cautious.

I have to agree with the other posters that suggest that the victim should take responsibility for his own actions. Fences are there for a reason. Life is about risks, and if you take a risk and fail, don't blame the guy next to you.

if an organization is going to make it accessible to allow public drunkenness beit in the streets, the harbourfront or beaches, then public security is a must. they damn well should be more responsible.

i would consider this to even be a legal liability issue.

every weekend at wasaga beach, the shorelines are patrolled by opp with night vision generation 4 binoculars (US military grade)... even though there is NO public organization holding a drunkfest- the town is responsible enough to know from years of incidents, that things happen when people are drunk in public.

I am sure once he wakes up and can think clearly, he'll realize that is his own fault, lawsuit aside.

Only difference here tho is that it isn't the city holding the event, it is a private enterprise that does get some city funding.

In fact, the organizers aren't the ones that sold him alcohol right? They arrange the parade and festivities. If there is any lawsuit to be filed it should be against the ones who sold him the alcohol, NOT the people who's event he attended while under the influence of said alcohol.

As for wasaga beach: there is a fear of drowning which is probably why they patrol it. Now if the city erected fences all along the shore to prevent anyone from accessing the beach at night, instead of having so many cops, then that would be a similar situation.

I say shut caribana down because there always will be someone doing something stupid.

While we're at it:
Shut down the CNE because people drink and smoke up there
Shut down all bridges everywhere because someone might jump off
Shut down all bars because hey, somene might drink too much and do something stupid
Shut down every community event because someone might drink too much
SHut down every concert venue and every concert because someone might decide to jump off the tier 2 seats

SHit, people have to be trusted to have 1 iota of common sense.....this SO reminds me of that idiot (was it last year?) who was on one of the upper decks at skydome and reached out for a fly ball and fell over.

They didn't erect barriers (aka fences) along all upper decks because hey, it's the asshole's fault for doing something stupid.

While we are at it, did you notice that all office buildings still have windows? Even after that idiot stock broker was showing off by running at one full tilt boogie in the TD Centre and went through (20 stories up).....

"Whitebread" here with my humble opinion.

Don't blame Carabana.

Don't blame the City.

No one made him drink.

He's 25, pretty much a legal adult and hypothetically responsible for his actions.

Yes, a lost leg is not a good thing.

Many more cops would just lead to " community" tension.

He truly farked up and now faces some tough consequences, but thats called life.

If this was the only "incident" at Caribanna this year its much improved over previous years where shootings and stabbings took place. Perhaps Caribanna is finally getting its act together.

LOL I'm compassionate for the 10 yr old with brain cancer....Or the 6 yr old who got hit by a truck on his way to the park....or a young girl out boxing day shopping and gets gunned down by a bunch of worthless wastes of skin...

I am NOT compassionate about a drunk 25 yr old getting run over by a parade float because he decided it would be a fan fucking tastic idea to jump over a barrier and give it a whirl...

Gimme a break, I'll reserve my compassion for those that need it.....
