Canada's Only Black-Owned Radio Station Ordered To Be Sold By An Ontario Court

For the past couple days, there has been a commercial stating that the radio is in receivership and ordered to be sold. As a listener from day one, I am saddened that this station will most likely become corporate bullshit like flow 93.5.

Apparently when the founder of the station died last year, it was uncovered that he was keeping a lot of the revenue for himself without paying bills. He apparently removed his longtime friend and shareholder from the company when he confronted him about the mounting debts, in which he was sued by him. The matter was not resolved due to his stroke. Fitzroy Gordon's (the founder and owner) widow and former friend Delford Blythe were given control of the company by a judge, but they just couldn't manage it.

Too bad about the alleged dishonesty of the radio station's founder, if that is what put the station into financial trouble.

Imho race has nothing to do with it. There are dishonest people in all races.

I don't know if there are any other black music oriented stations serving the GTA, etc., as I mostly listen to AM 680 for news, weather and traffic. When I do listen to music it's mostly classic era soul and funk from the 60's and 70's, with several thousand great songs on my iPod. But I think it would be a shame if there will no longer be a wide scope black music oriented radio station in Toronto, and not just "Smooth Jazz - Rhythmic AC"...

It means something to the Black and Caribbean community, as this community tends to not own institutions of power in most cases. They don't even have very much control over the things which they are known for producing. A lot of white people get triggered when something is mentioned as "black" owned as if it's a problem.

Anyways, Fitzroy Gordon died and his irresponsibilty caused the station to be lost. It's no longer black owned. The programming seems the same, but the profits are not being reinvested in the community that it caters too.

A lot of progressive people have this incessant need to point out our superficial differences as if they're important.

If you can't identify why it's important for diversity among business ownership (especially within marginalized communities that are known for creating and not reaping the benefits), you have a lot of learning to do.

It failed simply because of mismanagement yet you draw attention to the fact that it was mismanagement by a black management. In effect you are (inadvertently) making a statement that black people are bad at running a business.

LOL!! So much race and identity have been injected into, well, everything, you can't even discuss a simple topic like a business failure. Pathetic.

Here's one time that I'll agree with you.

Hold on, in your original post you said that Fitzroy Gordon was keeping a lot of the revenue for himself and not paying bills. If that was the case than what profits were being reinvested in the community? Wouldn't it be ironic if the new owners, whatever nationality they may be, actually invest more into the community it caters to than the original owner did? Will you continue to monitor and update us on that little factoid?

Or maybe this focus on our superficial differences is why our society is so divisive right now.

I would've said that, if that is what I meant. Intercity broadcasting isn't the only black business that was successful, so it makes no sense to say black people are bad at managing businesses. This company WAS more "Jamaican" run than "black," to be exact.

Fitzroy Gordon hid behind religion and conservative values, all while preaching black power, yet his hand was in the cookie jar the whole time. In addition to this mess, his adults kids and widow will have to battle it out in court over his estate.

I was saying that it could be interpreted that way. That was why I put the word inadvertent in there.
