Look you jerk. People should be smart enough to know there's too many of us here now to take care of. Yet we keep breeding on and pushing these other creatures out, some to extinction. A family of four is fine. Over that and you're contributing to the "too many people" problem. Humans have the ability and power to make the decisions that will minimize the "human suffering" you speak of. Yet they don't. Animals, on the other hand, are mostly surviving at the whim of us humans. For the most part, their life is very harsh, and to me its a wonder they survive as well as they do in many cases. The poor family of three needs to get off their duff and get a job, something the poor cat cannot do. Furthermore, the parents in that family had no business having a kid if they couldn't support it.

...is an example of how a pet owner is more humane? Anyone who is out of work or down or their luck, who might be mentally or physically challenged is just fucking out of luck and should have known better? Fucking let them stave - they have the abilty to "minimize" their "suffering". But Taby - ohmygod - he lives a harsh life snarfing down three meals a day and racking up vet bills for fur balls digested.

I'm a jerk because I think it is better to do what we can for our fellow humans? I suppose the passage into Sainthood must be when you get to the point that your cat is fat that it no longer even wants to move...

No thanks. Just because I'm an escort doesn't mean I don't have standards.

I'd like to try to tone down the posts here because I honestly don't think we're that far apart.

Here's my question:

If we had to choose between spending money on surgery for our pet or our own child, which would it be?

There are people who love animals and those that don't, but there are also many in between like me who will draw the line at spending a thousand to help a cat that is older and failing in health. I won't judge someone who will do everything possible, nor will I question another who has their pet put down because they are too difficult to deal with.
I've come to terms with the eventuality that I'll put my dog to sleep, I'll grieve and find another one - I love her but she isn't like a child to me.

Mlam: The point is they DON'T have to starve, there are services out there for them but it is their CHOICE not to partake. I know a few people who work in the shelters etc and they have to physically DRAG people into the shelters.

EVERYONE has a choice, down on their luck is no fucking excuse. For eg: I got into an argument with a beggar the other day. She was bitching at me because I wouldn't give her any money. I said "Listen sunshine, the place where I worked closed down a month ago and you don't see ME begging for change. I am hustling EARNING money, not asking for handouts..." She then yelled at me: "I CAN'T WORK, MY LEG IS MESSED UP FROM GETTING FUCKING DRAGGED BY A COP CAR" I said, "your leg sure is strong enuff for you to stand HERE ALL day and beg, it's strong enough to stand on an assembly line...."

and yes, postively, without a doubt, no fucking hesitation, if I saw a cat starving or ?? on the street I'd either take it to a shelter, feed it or take it in.....EOS

...is actually more to my point.

I understand that some people love their animals. My in-laws have a cat that they adore, as does my wife, who grew up with it.

But - as much as they love it, it is old, and it is going to pass one day. You take exceptioal efforts to save a human. A cat needs to be allowed the dignity of dying while it still feels like it is "king of the jungle" or whatever.

I can find as many animal lovers as are posting here that would claim it is CRUEL to extend the life of an animal when it is several injured or old - that it simply taunts the animal.

Pets are just that - pets.

..I hear you. I don't agree with you, but I hear you - that in TO, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who is in a position of needing assitance that didn't get their by their own choice. I guess I just feel like I'm willing to help my fellow man get past his previous failures if he is willing. And I am also willing to help those who mental capacity sometimes stands in the way of them getting the help that is available to them. I guess I'm saying I am not so quick to judge a person just because they aren't on top of their game right now. I'm not for giving drug addicts more drugs, but having been poor and hungry myself before, I know EVERYBODY in that condition isn't lazy or whatever. I guess when you grow up working class versus middle class, you just see people who need a hand differently.

Having said that - there are lots of peole in this world who are starving thanks to NO action on their part. And I just think that if you have money for an aged pet who probably is looking to move on to the litter box in the sky, well I think that money would be better spent feeding 3 or 4 families for a year someplace besides Canada.

IMHO...
