I feel ur pain! Many years ago a cat I had died of old age problems. One of the problems was blindness. Surprisingly, she learned to do quite well without the sight until her other problems finally caught up with her and I had to put her down. Your cat may learn to cope quite well.

Sorry everyone. A close relative passed away this week. As far as I'm concerned, it was to a large extent, atleast partly, due to indifference by the hospital and her doctor. Guess I was having a hard time relating to a high level of concern for a cat. I over reacted. I am a cat lover, to some degree but my rural roots taught me to differentiate between the two.

I won't post for some time. I didn't mean to ...... Reading my post, I see that my comments were uncalled for.

I say try james t kirk's solution. The loss of eyesight by itself shouldn't turn your cat innto a complete vegetable. Animals experience the world more through their mouths and noses than their eyes (this explains why they get hit by cars). I've known a couple of people with a blind cat & dog and they weren't zombies by any means. There might be overall health issues involved here, which may or may not be reversible.

Sounds like going to the Vet these days is the same as going to an MD. That is, there are no more Vets or MD,s just product reps! I've gone twice in the last 9 years and it will take alot to get me there again.

You were less than diplomatic, but you were not way off base.

It never ceases to amaze me how much "care" people have for pets in a world where people die of starvation by the thousands everyday. In a world where thousands of people in this very city went hungry last night.

Humans rank above animals on the food chain. Until "you" can tell me you have done everything reasonbly possible to make this planet a better place for HUMANS, I don't care about "your" pet.

Let's see...$1000 for a medical procedure on a cat....or feed a poor family of three FOR A YEAR. Apparently this is a tough call for some people...

As strange as it sounds to some of you, I have paid more than $1000 for surgery on an animal. $1600 to be exact.

It was after my dog got hit by a car. I now have insurance in case it happens again.

Would I shell out that kind of money again to pay for an animal's medical bills? You bet.

If I had a choice between spending $1600 to save my dog's life or Brian Mulroney's life, the choice would be obvious. Woof woof.

this same thing happened to my cat. he kept going to the door and meowing for me to let him out but when i would open the door he wouldn't go. I'd close it and he'd start whining again. After a couple days of this i pushed him out the door and he fell as he went over the step. I realized he couldn't see. It explained alot of his recent wacko behavior. (ifelt really bad too cuz i had been yelling at him constantly "Virgo what the hell do U want?")

He had been a very adventurous cat up until then. Then he was just slow and lethargic and fearful. I did end up putting him to sleep but he was 13.

Dude: the difference between humans and our pets is that any human in toronto who goes hungry or homeless does so of their own CHOICE or as a result of a personal decision on their part. As pet owners we decided to take on the responsibility of caring for our animals therefore we are directly responsible for their well being, their health and their happiness. As humans we are responsible for our own actions first, then those in our realm aka family unit, then society's, country and so on. For many single people, our pets become our surrogate children, friends, and loved ones. So, in your narrow POV you're saying that we should put down our children when something like this happens?

Look you jerk. People should be smart enough to know there's too many of us here now to take care of. Yet we keep breeding on and pushing these other creatures out, some to extinction. A family of four is fine. Over that and you're contributing to the "too many people" problem. Humans have the ability and power to make the decisions that will minimize the "human suffering" you speak of. Yet they don't. Animals, on the other hand, are mostly surviving at the whim of us humans. For the most part, their life is very harsh, and to me its a wonder they survive as well as they do in many cases. The poor family of three needs to get off their duff and get a job, something the poor cat cannot do. Furthermore, the parents in that family had no business having a kid if they couldn't support it.

Well, when I started this thread I was sure some people would make nasty callous comments. I just hope people like that don't have pets or if they do, they treat them like shit. And as far as these do-gooders go who say give a thousand to a starving family before you spend money on your pet --- charity begins at home, all right. What I really can't stand is companies or company presidents who give money to hospitals, homeless shelters etc. yet they treat their own workers like serfs and pay them like peasants.......Such hypocrisy. Clean up your own backyard first!!

Obviously, there are animal people and people who don't like animals (for whatever reason)

Personally, I prefer the company of those who do like animals since I feel that they have a greater sense of humanity to them. I also think that animals are good judges of character.

My one cat was a cast off from an ex GF. Originally, I was just supposed to baby sit the cat for 2 weeks while she was away from home (the cat came to stay at my place)

After a couple of days, the cat and I were getting along quite well. When my ex came home and came by my place, she came upstairs to the bedroom where the cat was sleeping and the cat looked at her, jumped off the bed, ran down to the basement and hid under a table. Obviously, the cat didn't want to go home.

So, she stayed, and she's been with me for 2 years now.

At the time when the cat came to stay, I had literally just lost my father, and I was then parentless since my mother had already died a few years before that. I felt completely alone for the first time in my life (despite having a GF at the time.) Without a doubt, one of the saddest darkest times I have ever experienced. The cat stuck to me like glue and prevented me from completely losing it. I got more caring and concern out of a 10 pound cat than any other human being in my life. And that's the sad God's honest truth.

If I have to drop cash to keep her alive, I don't even think about it. I don't care how much it is.

As far as the guy in the alley goes - there are government programs for him and his chosen lifestyle. My taxes pay for that.

Cats are simply amazing creatures...mine knows when I'm in a bad mood. She'll seek me out & nuzzle me until I pet her, and it always works too, I always feel better. They also have their own personalities...mine is pretty grumpy with everyone but me. A previous g/f of mine was actually jealous of her!!

Not long ago, my sister & brother in law were considering going down to New Orleans to help rescue abandoned pets. I don't care what the situation is, I would NOT have left my cat to die. If I'm buggin' out, she's coming with me!

And yes, I would pay just about anything to keep her alive. In regard to someone who can't understand what it's like to have that kind of connection with a pet, I simply feel sorry for them.

...the fact that you would even compare an animal to a human child is EXACTLY the problem...and is laughable.

Let's see now. $1600 to save my dog's life or Dubya's grandchild?

The mutt still gets the surgery.
