Its a Dem State. For decades. And they really aren't doing much . Just by say extending services to mentally ill people they could cut things done. But they leave them in the streets.
It used to be Governed by Republicans for decades that had zero interest with such people in their hearts. The Democrats have spent billions trying to address it. The latest is this:

There is always controversy, no matter how much the Governments try to address the problem.

We all know that Republicans presidents or Governors always opposed Public Funding for such Institutions:

So, we all agree California's best days are history although we might disagree on the reasons why.

Next, are NY's best days history? Ok, we can make that another thread.
Not really!!

With 50 states in the Union and 100 percent to go around, the average state’s contribution to U.S. GDPwould technically be two percent. While a lot of states are in that percentage range, there are some economic powerhouses that surpass that goal easily.

The seven most populous states, California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio are also the seven biggest contributors to U.S. GDP, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Yet, California is way ahead of the competition as far as per-capita contribution goes. While 12 percent of Americans live in California, the state contributed 14.8 percent to GDP in 2021. New York state, where 6 percent of Americans live, had a share of 7.7 percent of GDP in 2020. Florida, which has a 6.6 percent share of population, only contributed 5.2 percent of GDP.

As far as regions go, the Southeast, including populous states Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, contributed the biggest share of just over a fifth to U.S. GDP. The Far West held the second largest share of almost exactly one fifth, largely driven by California.

I couldn't quickly find the article in the L.A. Times. If anyone has a link, I would like to read the original article.

"All 10 of the above facts were published in the Los Angeles Times."

GDP is only one indicator.

California has immense social and financial problems.

I like to read the original article by the L.A. Times because it can't be accused of being a rightie rag sheet. It is a lefty paper in a hardcore lefty state.

"Overall, we rate the LA Times Left-Center Biased based on editorial positions that favor the left and High for factual reporting due to a clean fact-check record."

Its base as the headquarters for tech kinda skews it. It doesn't translate into nearly as many jobs as manufacturing and other industries. Add in the movie industry, porn industry, arguculture(and remember the water usage is bad there) and its job base at lower levels is service based.

I was there recently. There are as many homeless working poor as jobless ones. Maybe more. Thats dystopian.

California is poised to become the 4th largest economy in the world. It will even surpass Germany's economy.
It is still the fastest growing economy in the USA. Of course the right wing media will try to spin the myth that jobs are moving out of state.
It may even have surpassed Germany in that respect!!

The Los Angeles Times is considered left wing. I read some extracts from the article but I would like to see the original article that was printed in the L.A. Times.

I was in L.A. 4 lifetimes ago.
