Would any of you guys recommend it, do you think it works, and did you have a hard time getting used to it? Anything you can tell me would be helpful

Thanks

I know a two people who use a CPAP machine. One guy swears by it, and has improved his life dramatically, he was always tired before, but now he gets restful sleep. I know another lady who was told to use one, but could not get to used to it, now suffers in silence, always tired, and sleepy. She is also living with the risk of heart attack or stroke as her sleep anea makes her stop breathing for up to 2 minutes, many times a night.

Many of the cpap machines that you see for sale are from people that have lost weight.

I swear by mine. It takes 2-3 weeks to get used to it. When you get the perscription you take it to one of the distributors. They will let you try different masks and machines until you find one that is comfortable. The first night you have it on for a couple hours, and it's gets longer the more you use it until you go all night without noticing it. Just like you don't notice you are wearing glasses after a while.

The CPAP has a 95+% success rate with patients. There are other methods like mouth guards however they cost more and are not covered by OHIP.

Took me a long time to get used to mine. The key is the mask - you need to try out different ones to find the best fit. They've actually made great advances in the technology over the past few years. The machine I use now is actually an APAP machine where the air pressure adjusts to your sleep position. It's fantastic.

If you're like me and don't have a medical plan go down to the US to get supplies - masks, hoses etc. At least 50% cheaper there. We get ripped off up here (what else is new)

I use one and it has made a great difference for me. I suffered a mild stroke due to high blood pressure caused by prolonged sleep apnea. Took me a couple days to adjust to sleeping with mask but I feel very refreshed in the morning after using machine. I am using a Resmed S9 with humidifier.

got one last year after a sleep test confirms that i stop breathing too many times during my sleep...
the sleep specialist reported me to the authorities because i drive...i guess i'm supposed to wear it but NEVER do...
i found that it made my sleep worse. did a questionaire to see how if i fall asleep throughout my day..NO! I'M THE MOST AWAKE PERSON I KNOW! ALL THE TIME! I AM NEVER TIRED!!!
Wore the machine a few times and that's it...

Make sure you get the one that stops forcing air down your throat whenever you exhale, or you may find it very hard to breathe. That type costs more, however. My co-worker gave me the warning before hand. THANK GOODNESS! My setting is pretty high. It would have been terrible if I didn't have the one that lets me exhale without difficulty...too bad i don't wear it.

Actually, your post has reminded me to break mine out and blown the dust off...

TB, I employ you to please please reconsider using your CPAP nightly. Like you, I found it an annoyance and would stop using it after the first 2 weeks. Eventually the nightly stop breathing caused me to have a mild heart attack. It turns out that the stop breathing deprive your body of oxygen and that in turn puts a huge strain on the heart. Somehow this important fact was not in the CPAP documents. Now I try using my CPAP each night but occationally the TV is watching me throughout the night.

don't they have some kind of mouth insert that forces you to keep your mouth open?

I have had the Resaid machine for about 3 years and would recommend it. I have mild apnea but it helps me sleep through the night without waking for the most part. Obviously snoring is eliminated which is an SO benefit. Started with the nostrils only mask but found it got dislodged as I tossed and turned, much better with the mask. Overall if you have been diagnosed would say you are crazy if you don't give it a good try, the first week or two are a challenge but if you get through that all good

You guys have been a big help. I would just about sell my sole for a good nights sleep. Ill admit I was skeptical about getting the machine but I think Ill go ahead with it. I need one that is fairly portable as I practically live on a boat all summer. I wonder how a lady friend would react to watching me hook up to a machine after a evening of passion. Well its probably better than keeping her up with my snoring all night. Thanks for your help.:thumb:

they are all portable but as far as i know they all have to be plugged in

it seems to me they should have optional battery so you can take them camping etc

every six months you should replace the mask

it is all covered by my insurance

that ohip pays for the sleep studies and part of the cpac must mean they have strong medical evidence that they work

i find when i do not use it i snore and wake up more although i still wake up with it on just not as much

it is amazing how much we wake up

I know how you feel I did the same thing. For over a year I chose not to wear it but it made me feel worse. I was nodding off during the day and even while driving. I knew I had to get back to using it or risk potential death. Consult your physician and inquire as to whether you qualify for an APAP machine. They are better than a CPAP because its not continuous airflow. The machines are around $1500 but OHIP covers 70% if you qualify. Also invest in a good mask that is comfortable. They also need to be changed every 6-9 months. Good luck.

When I left the Corps I put on a lot of weight and sleep became an issue. The CPAP helped a lot. When my weight came back down I did need it anymore but I know it is not all about weight for some people.
