I can't be certain but I think the guy was a thug.

You odds of being killed by random in Toronto by someone with a gun is pretty slim. That wasn't a drive by. Nor a situation of him stepping in to help and a situation spins out of control. Or wrong place at wrong time or whatever.....Looked like a planned attack.
