It's not even close. We are constantly getting raped here aside from the consumer goods. Gas, wireless, booze, toll roads, airfare, taxes.........we overpay for everything here.
yeah we do pay too much for everything but we do have a pretty good healthcare system. Better than some, not as good as others, but still, we can walk into any doctor's office or hospital and not worry about how we're going to pay for our treatment......

Plus a better education system and social services in general.

You get what you pay for...

Two of the things I'm considering purchasing are a Blu Ray player and a home theatre system. Check out the two theatre systems from Sony and Samsung at Future Shop (both $499); are either of these good? I'm not a tech guro and don't need the latest and greatest; just looking for a good quality system.

They are crap. Cheap, but crap at any price is too much.

The decent lines at Future Shop are Energy and Klispch Reference series for speakers. They have some nice Velodyne subs as well.

LOL let me guess, you also rave over the Kiro and Bose?

Now they aren't reference series systems, but for the money? for a beginner? They are probably pretty good.......

Uhhh no. I assume you mean Kuro? They are nice especially at the recent blowout prices. As for Bose, probably the most overpriced crap around.

Seriously tboy, don't you get tired of being wrong?

There are nice systems at all price points. The Sony and Samsung systems are disposable. They are cheaply made, and you can get better sound if you want to seek it out. Buying cheap things usually mean you either do not enjoy them as much, or things cost you more in the long run as you need to replace them more often. For not a lot more money, I would put the money into a system I would still want to listen to ten years from now (e.g. the Energy RC mini, which is now on sale at Future Shop).

No, actually I don't get tired of being proven wrong. That is one way to learn. Anyone who accepts another's opinion without question is a fricken idiot..........

As for "cheaply made". Well, that is up to opinion. A $1000.00 system is a reasonable mid priced system for most users. Are there better systems out there? Possibly, most probably. Are there better systems for the same money? Doubtful. I have YET to see anyone build a system of mid priced components, including a BR player, 5 speakers and a sub, for $1000.00.

Hell, most decent speakers are $1500.00 a pair.

So, for the newbie, I think they're both pretty decent systems. For the audiophile? Maybe not so much.....

BTW: instead of simply knocking them, why not contribute and put up links to what you feel is a better system for the SAME money? Then you might actually help a fellow terbite out instead of just saying "no"......

Newsflash! All electronics systems these days are disposable. They're designed that way.

And if you're still using one after ten years, you're no electronics aficionado. If you can even find components that will still work with it.

You've got a point there keeb. If someone was really concerned with sound quality they certainly wouldn't be using MP3s or CDs, they'd have turntables because vinyl STILL gives you the best frequency response and is 1000x warmer sounding than digital........

I stand by my advice Keeb: go out, listen to it, if you like it? Buy it and enjoy it....oh, and if you have any trouble setting it up or hooking it up, send me a PM and I'll help you out.

One thing about these "kits". The hook up is pretty idiot proof. Stick the blue plug into the blue hole, the orange into the orange etc etc.

Another thing I thought of to look for: is the sub self powered or powered by the amp/receiver?

No point to enduring the horendous crowds.

I will not wait in a line up where an item is advertised at a low price but there is a stipulation of minimum 20 per store. That means if you are number 21, tough luck. I would like to point out that the last few years at loblaws they would sell off on boxing day the SD cards for digital cameras so they would not have to keep the inventories till the next high demand time in the summer. Last year I picked up a dual pack of 2 gig SD cards for $10.99 It might even be cheaper this year or you might get more gigs.

DUDE....if you're 21 yo'll probably get one...that is the MINIMUM not the maximum...sure, you could miss out but isn't that better than not knowing if the store has ANY?

For eg: 2001 says 215 chainwide...that means that one store could have 50, and another none....wouldn't it be worse to stand in line not knowing if there are any or not?

But, I won't stand in line for anything lol. There is NOTHING I want bad enough to get up at 4 am for......Now if they were selling brand new F150 4 x 4's for $10 grand, then maybe (then only maybe). There IS such a thing as having a little dignity (which from those black friday videos is lacking in many people).

If I was still 21, I probably would get up at 4AM and stand in line to save $50.

I was at Henry's last Summer standing in line to get their 100th anniverary gift certificate. I offered a homeless man $10 to stand in line for me. He politely declined saying his time is worth more than $10 cash:confused:.

the hobby needs more capitalism
JC Penny's on the other hand has had terrific sales going on since Black Friday. Plenty of vehicles at the Malls with Ontario plates.
I'm not surprised. I noticed this Christmas is more about "need" than "want" for most people.

No disagreement there :)

As for "cheaply made". Well, that is up to opinion.
Not at all. Go look at them. I also gave an example of the Energy speakers at FS which are very nicely made.

A $1000.00 system is a reasonable mid priced system for most users.
Totally agree there. You can get a nice system for 1000 bucks.

Hell, most decent speakers are $1500.00 a pair.
Nah. There are nice speakers for 200 a pair (Klipsch RB-10s, which FS has sold for 200 a pair at times).

I have already pointed to the Energy speakers, and the Velodyne subs (both of which are on sale).

Not all equipment is disposable. There are still people making beautiful, affordable equipment. As I said, go look at the Energy RC mini at FS. It is a beautiful mini cabinet in piano black. Sounds great, looks great, and will last you a long time. It is also a real speaker, vs the HTIB you were looking at with speakers that do not go below 140hz (which is much too high, even when offloaded to a nice subwoofer, versus what is essentially a woofer they package with these things as it does not go that low).

As for electronics being disposable, for the front end they are simply now another form of computer (and many people now use tricked out computers for a front end to good effect). When it comes down to speakers and amplifiers, very little has changed over the last 50 years. What many consider the greatest speaker of all time (Quad ESL 57) is about 50 years old now. A vintage HK Citation from the 60s is still world class. There is very little innovation in speakers and amps, and if you buy something truly nice, it will last you a long long time.

As the saying goes, quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten :)

So I'm probably going to get either the Samsung HT-BD1255 home theatre or the Sony BDVE500W home theatre, both on sale for $499 at Future Shop. Links for specs below:

http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/...AC/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=features

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...&productId=8198552921665806556#specifications

I'm not that into it to want to mix and match to build my own system; I'd rather buy a complete set and just hook it up.

I've been reading reviews and both theatres have average audio quality, which is good enough for me. I currently have no home theatre system so this is my first go-around. Both have iPod inputs which I want but the Sony does not enable you to access the content via your TV whereas the Samsung does (pro for Samsung). Neither has video input (con for both). I kinda like the Samsung's appearance better and my HDTV is Samsung so standardization is preferred.

Is there anything particularly negative I should consider about the Sony or the Samsung?

Well quality aside, the biggest issue I would have is the subwoofer. What they are really giving you is a woofer given the speakers offer limited range. The two most important speakers in a home theater are usually the center channel and the sub. Neither system will give you the "bone crushing' sensation a real subwoofer can, and a real subwoofer can really heighten movies if you are in an environment where you can listen at high volumes. If you can afford it, and can play at high volume, I would look at adding a real sub (they have cheap Klipsch and Velodyne subs at FS that are nice, you can always see if you can swing a deal).
