How are bonuses paid out at your place of work? Is it a set percentage of your salary? Is it based on performance? Does the percentage and amount vary by position? Do you get a christmas bonus i.e. cash, or do you just get a turkey or some other gift?

here and there
I own my company. Employees receive a gift at Christmas and an annual bonus calculated as a percentage of pre tax profit and divided based on individual performance. Reviews are done annually and are monitored quarterly.

That sounds fair, so if an employee of yours makes 50K a year, roughly how much would they get in bonuses? Of course it depends on profit and individual performance, but take an average year with an average performance.

For the past 2 years my bonus has taken the form of additional shares in my company. The last monetary bonus I received was in 2003.

I earn a bonus equal to about 20% of my base salary, based half on my own performance versus personal goals agreed at the start of the year, and half on the performance of my business unit. If I perform exactly as I'm expected to perform I get the personal performance 10%. If I perform better or worse than I'm expected to I get more or less. Similarly if the business unit beats or misses its target the 10% based on business performance becomes more or less.

The *expectation* is that I will get 20%, so in that sense it is not a "bonus", as to some extent I count on earning that money. If I earned less than 20% I would seriously consider looking for another job, as that would imply either I or the business wasn't doing very well. To date I have always earned more than 20%.

That seems low, I'd think on average an employee would get at least a 10-15% bonus based on their gross yearly earnings.

At my company, I get base salary, car allowance, phone, insurance, etc.

Then, we get monthly commissions, and quarterly bonuses. Sky is limit, but I'd say at least 50% of my total compensation comes in commission and bonus, if not more.
