well, well, well....

you belong to a union, for the past 3 or 4 years, you have been told to save money for the very likely event of a lockout. you have been brainwashed to not have a cap on your potential earnings. you have basically become one of the flock of sheep, following your leader and his directives. you get to the end of your contract with your owner/employers, now you begin sitting out a whole years worth of pay, sticking to the principles of no cap. wait a second, 9-10 months in, your own leader all of a sudden, does an about face, he will accept a cap.....

so, what have you sat out all this time for? this proposal could have been put forth from day one, and then negotiated, and hardly anytime/ if any at all, would have been lost. my oh my....

bob, you fucking knob, you really have some explaining to do to your own guys! you sell out your rooks and 2nd and 3rd year players, so that the fat cats can get even fatter, now you turn around and sell out almost all of your own rank and file. pick up the toronto star bob, alot of employment opportunities out there, you'll be looking for some shortly, unless you can come up with some more quick-thinking wool to pull over the players eyes!

bob really looked shocked and surprised, like a deer in the headlights, when he gave his union address to the cancelation of the season! he thought the owners were bluffing, that they would give in, just like in '94. he thought wrong. way to bobby boy, your boys will now have to settle for an even worse deal than they think they were getting now!

steel in for the long haul owners, and really hammer it to them now! players greed and true colours have really shone through! i like don cherry's comment today on the fan590, that people used to look at hockey players with admiration, now they will see them for what they really are, overpaid, greedy businessmen, who just happen to play hockey.

i knew this day was quite possible, as have most of you, but, until bettman stepped to the microphone and said the words, i had held out hope. it has been a tough day for me, i really have a passion for this wonderful game. to you players, to you bob goodenow, i say thanks for nothing! take your pucks and sticks, and go the fuck home! fuck you greedy bastard players! fuck you too goodenow, you geeky four-eyed balding brainwashing transgendered moron!

oh, the owners and bettman have dissappointed to, but i wholeheartedly understand why they had to do it, and what they are fighting for. again, i hope you now stick it real good to the players! no more mr. nice guy. if this has to go on for another year or so, so be it. innocence has been lost now, don't let it have happened for naught.

I think you pretty well nailed the situation Plrys99. Can't add too much.

Mr. Goodenow's job is to get the best possible deal for his players. He needed to take the $42.5 with no linkage. It was better than the owners wanted to give and it only gets worse from here. There is no way they'll get anywhere near something to make up for a lost year of their relatively short careers. A tragic miscalculation by Mr. Goodenow. The players need to dump him ASAP.

Mr. Bettman, keep the faith. We need a cap so the Leafs can't buy their way past the Sens every year (Leetch, Nolan et al).

Whatever strategy he presents to the union now is going to be questioned. He sold them on the "no cap" issue and then caved in without most of the players knowing it let alone having a say in it. He's lost his credibility. How can he possibly lead them?

It's called Brinksmanship

I don't think Goodenow miscalculated, I'm pretty sure he was aware that there was a better than 50/50 chance the season would be cancelled, and the player reps worked hard to drive the point home over the past year.

The work stoppage wasn't the union's bluff, it was Bettman who set the ultimatum before last season was even done. In the past the players have played without a CBA to give negotiations more time without cancelling games. That option was removed by the early lockout action.

Of course the NHLPA said they wouldn't accept any cap, just as the NHL was adamant about linkage. Nobody ever reveals their real bottom line until the negotiations are in sudden death overtime. If either side had been more reasonable 6 months ago, it would only have encouraged the other side to try taking them down even farther. Anyway the two final offers were probably publicity gestures after the recognition on both sides that a deal wouldn't happen.

The players are MORONS! Check some of the comments regarding how they can outlast the owners.

Hmmm....billionaire owners, most very well educated, some self made in the business world, some are even corporations.

v.s.

Hockey players and their idiot, soon to be unemployed when the union folds; rep Goodenow.

In previous thread I've voiced my strong opposition agaist this union and their behavior - it's nice to see I'm not alone.

Please God, let them use replacement players....

Her's a thought though for the players - most fans cheer for THE TEAM not the players. Most fans could care less who's on the team ...as long as they win. When they call up the guys in the minors and start using European players, I will bet anything that these guys will fold like a pair of twos.

Quite true!

One of the most entertaining hockey games I've been to in the last two years was the Baby Sens vs Baby Leafs game at the Corel Centre. A fight right of the opening face off, no trap and the final score 4 to 3. Oh yeah....the ticket price was $22.00 for a seat that costs $145.00 when the Senators play. Go figure eh? Bring on those replacement players and lower ticket prices so a family can afford to go to a game again!
