With less than a month left on the season, the biggest pleasant surprise has to be JOSE BAUTISTA. Not far behind is JOHN BUCK.

Biggest disappointments are HILL and LIND.

Speaking of disappointments, one thing I have been very disappointed with this season is the fact that the catchers (mostly Molina) havent done a good job of getting to their knees on pitches in the dirt. There have been a lot of wild pitches/passed balls this year by the Blue Jays. It has allowed base-runners to advance or even score and also prevented the Jays from keeping the DP in order at times. It really has been an epidemic. However, I do have to give Buck credit because he seems to be vastly improved from his KC days as far as blocking pitches in the dirt.

Ashby has been going nuts all year with respect to the spotty defence both catchers have shown all year.

Since he knows more about catching than I do I'll take his word for it.

When put on the spot about Molina's refusal to get down and block pitchs in the dirt he was trying to be as polite as possible but you could tell he was frustrated by Molna's ''indifference'' as he put it.

When I look at the Jays starting pitching of Romero, Marcum, Cecil, Morrow, I think that an A.J. Burnett (at $18million a year) might be only the 5th starter. Yes, I think A.J. is way overrated and overpaid.

16.5 million per season to be exact and yes the Yanks overpaid as usual.

nice win today, but why was Hill yanked in the ninth for McCoy?
His knee was acting up, and after he beat out that infield hit in the 9th, Cito wasn't taking any chances.

I hope it doesn't slow him down, he's been tearing the cover off the ball lately, and a good September might help him return to form next year, after 2010's less-than-impressive showing. As for defensive measures, there are problems with all of them, but fielding % and errors are probably the least useful in determining defensive ability. I personally like the UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) but you need a large sample size before you can draw any conclusions.

In other news, the other "Hill" - Shawn Hill from Mississauga, ON - is making a well-deserved spot start on Thursday. Here's hoping the local kid can show us that he's all the way back from his 2nd Tommy John surgery! :)

I'm a little confused too, it seems that mlb.com has him from Mississauga, but the Toronto Sun and the Blue Jays Twitter feed both say Georgetown...

When in doubt, go with the wiki:

Shawn Hill (born April 28, 1981 in Mississauga, Ontario) is a Canadian baseball pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

Blue Jays are adding a seventh minor league affiliate to give players in their system more playing time. Most MLB teams have 6 minor league teams.
Bluefield West Virginia will become a rookie advanced level team.

The seven minor league affiliates for now are:

Las Vegas AAA
New Hampshire AA
Dunedin A+
Lansing A
Auburn A -
Bluefield (Rookie Advanced)
GCL Blue Jays (Rookie League)

Contracts with Vegas and Auburn are over after this year; so, there's a chance 1 or even both teams move.
I've heard Auburn has a good chance of moving and Vegas and Toronto will likely stay together for at least one more year.

------
Aaron Sanchez, who Jays got as a comp pick for losing Marco Scutaro to Boston looks like a pretty good prospect.
He's 18 years old and struck out 37 batters in 25 innings in Jays minor system after getting drafted.
He walks a lot of batters; but, he's 18 and likely at least 3 years away from big leagues; so, he has a lot of time to work on control.

Mel Queen thinks they haven't had a pitching prospect like him in a long time. He thinks he's better than Chris Carpenter at the same age and Queen demanded that the Jays draft him.

I hope they get another AAA affiliate, the PCL is about as hitter-friendly as you can get, and with all the young arms coming down the pipeline, we need to give them work at the AAA level before promoting them to the majors. Kyle Drabek and Zach Stewart had to stay in AA last year, because a year in the PCL would have hindered their development and might even have shattered their confidence.

I like Mel, he's the guy who rebuilt Roy Halladay after he was sent down to A-ball in 2000. If he says that Sanchez is legit, I'd be inclined to believe him.

Tough year to be a Jays fan, but lots of hope for the future! :)

Not as tough as I thought it was gonna be. I think we ended out with much more to cheer about than anticipated for this season.

How are you at swinging a bat, Nikki?

The home runs keep coming. The Vernon is within 6 of his career high but then his career high is only 33.
He's probably having a $13-14 million year. Somewhat overpaid but not outrageously.

I have a lot of optimism for the future, and I'm very pleased with their performance this year, but it's tough being in the AL East. In order to reach the playoffs, we'll have to be one of the top three teams in baseball, and that's a tall order no matter what. Even though this year is encouraging, we still have a long way to go.

My bat? Oh, I was pretty good at hitting the fastball, couldn't handle the curve... I still knock around a couple of balls from time to time, and I like to keep my arm in shape, too... I wasn't much of a pitcher, but I was a great catcher. (I guess some things haven't changed, lol. :p)

Jokes aside, the last part is actually true; that's why I know so much about the game. Anyone who's ever played knows the catcher's the smartest player on the field - I had to think for the pitcher, too! ;-)

For those who continue to downplay the impact of the Jays playing in the AL East and how it is no excuse not to making the playoffs.

Current cumulative records of the 6 divisions:

AL East--51 games over .500
Central--10 under
West--15 under

NL East--19 over
Central--53 under
West--18 over

They should merge the American and National leagues into one league and have a playoff system similar to NHL hockey or NFL football.
