They didn't change after one debate. They changed because they were outed Due to the debate. His condition considering he had not done any news conferences or scrums, limited public appearances for a year prior, was well known. And they tried to hide until it couldn't be.
And then suddenly a change, with all the I's dotted and T's crossed just suddenly came together? Reeks of contingency planning in case it went south.
