To all the haters of "rap", you may want to look at this genre as more than music, because hip-hop is a culture. Hip-Hop culture was at its peak when it was kept underground, unfortunately, this new "mainstream" version takes away the true essence, IMO.

Anyways on to my Hip-Hop Ratings:

Best (male) Solo: Christopher Wallace aka Notorious B.I.G. (Tupac Shakur is not a far behind... If anything, their rivalry inspired some amazing music!)

Best (female) Solo: Eve

Best Group: A Tribe Called Quest (old school generation)
Wu-Tang Clan (new school generation)

Best Producer: Dr. Dre

Phattest Beats Dropped: Dj Premier and/or RZA

Best Album (solo): 'Only built for cuban lynx' by Raekwon

Best Album (group): Enter the 36 Chambers (Wu-tang)
Midnight Marauders (Tribe)

Best New Rapper: 50 cents (respect for starting G-Unit)

Best Song: 'Sound bwoy bureil' by Smiff 'n Wessun (Cocoa Brovaz)
Pioneers: Run DMC & N.W.A

I'll give ya credit for most of your picks but IMO the best rap album of all time (solo) was Life After Death by Biggs and best rap (group) album was RUN-DMC by Run Dmc, ground breakin and paved the way for everybody else.

Like the other guy said, everybody has their own opinion.

Meth,

You location is fucked.

Shaolin Allen???

It's Shaolin Island. It sounds like Allen, but he's saying island. As in Staten Island.

But I like your taste.
I know he says Shaolin Island, but this was an inside joke with my buddies. Good eye though! :)

To those who are putting down rap and biggin up rock remember this. Everyone has different tastes and that is a part of life. If you dont like the music just stay off the thread and start a Rock thread.

I personally love every type of music because each and every genre has something to offer.

Peace

Hip-hop is non-linear. It doesn't follow a pattern like other forms of music. That's why it is ground breaking music. That's why it is successful.
Wow, have they got you snowed. I was just listening to 50 Cent on Egos & Icons talking about how he follows a formula for all his songs and taught the same formula to his minions that are following in his footsteps.

So much for non-linear...

I agree RUN-DMC was intstrumental in bringing rap into the rock gendre and bringing rap mainstream, but I'm suprised nobody has mentioned Grand Master Flash and the Furious five. "Rappers Delight"....IMO they where the founders of rap.

Name me one rock group in this day that has surpassed Snoop Dogg, Fifty Cent, Ludacris, and Eminem in terms of sales and hits.
I don't know about surpassed but Metallica has sure sold alot of records, same with The Rolling Stones.(you said "in this day") they're still rock'n rollin LOL :p

personally I don't think rappers have longevitiy in the music business.... 10-20 yrs max and that's if they go the R&b route in the later years LOL.Bands like The Stones,Metallica,Aerosmith etc have survived many years without dying out and continue to perform and sellout venues.

I have to cross Snoop Dogg off my list. Any rapper that does a song with a boy bander (justin timberlake), who is singing the chorus "you better not fuck with me" in the dirty version, i lose all respect for. Snoop was great in his early career, but this is a low move for $'s.
Come on, you can't hold that against him. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Justin fan, but he does have some catchy tunes like Seniorita and Rock Your Body. Pharrell's done some stuff with JT as well. Anyway Snoop Doggy Dogg is definitely in my Top 3 with Luda and Beasties. Gangsta Rap, Porn and Weed?!?! That man is a triple threat.

Anyway more importantly I just found this version of California Love. Its a remix by DJ Rectangle and features Snoop, Lil'Kim, KRS1, Biggie, Slick Rick, Jay Z, Ice Cube, Dre, ODB and others. I'm sure the song is years old, but this song is absolutely incredible from start to finish. The version I have is over 13 minutes long and I can;t stop listening to it. It's like listening to 5 different songs in a row but all tied well together. Crazy heavy beats!!!

Sample lyric: (ODB)

They go ooh and aw when I jump in my car,
People treat me like Kareem Abdul Jabaar

Not really. You just gave one very poor example.

Kurtis Blow was the king of Rap in the 70's. He was using disco beats over a break. He was the ultimate party MC. Run DMC brought the in the rock beats with their hit single "Rock Box" in the early 80's. Public Enemy was the 1st group to use 100 beats/minute and use rap as a medium for making political statements. KRS1 and Boogie Down Productions were making social commentary with their music.

NWA and Ice Tee started the whole gansta rap genre which 50 cent followed. Stetsasonic fused jazz with hip-hop. Tyree Cooper and Mr. Lee started the entire Hip-House fad which is still big in Chicago. EPMD were using hardcore 70's funk beats in their early albums.

Now how influential is Rap? Remember the New Jack Swing era of R&B in the 90's? Groups like Guy, Jodeci, Bell Biv Devoe and Boyz-to-Men were using Rap beats in their music. The same can be said for Mary J, Blige, Mariah Carey, and Montell Jordan.

Their isn't one successful artist in the Pop and R&B field in this day that hasn't used rap lyrics in their music. Usher has hooked up with Ludicris. Beyonce has hooked up with Jay-Z. Mariah has hooked up with Da Brat, Puffy, and Jay-Z. Christina Aguilera has hooked up with Redman. Justin Timberlake has hooked up with Snoop Dogg.

Even rock artists have hooked up with Rap artists. Do you think that Aerosmith would have had the resurrgance they had in the early 90's if Run DMC didn't do their cover of "Walk this Way"? Kid Rock and LimpBiscut have also fused rock and rap. Sorry Bud. You make not like it, but hip-hop is here to stay.

How can you judge the longevity for something that has only been in the "main stream" for just over 20 years?
