I've had a dog, many cats, a turtle, and a couple unusual pets. A friend had a skunk (with the scent box removed) and they are apparently good pets. Some pets tie you down a lot. What's the best pet if you like a bit of freedom but want a pet that is fun to own? For instance some dogs are great ice breakers to meet women, but are so needy they eventually ruin any relationship.

A dog can be more work than kids. Cats are good because they don't need to be walked every day or have their shit picked up. You can leave food and water and take off for the weekend without worrying about them. But then you have to like cats.

I am a big fan of cats - but active breeds that are 'dog like' in personality.
All the advantages of interactive personality, but they can be left alone for longer periods of time and tend to be less expensive than dogs.
But really any pet adds so much love and value to one's life, they are all worthwhile.
(If an SP is a pet lover / owner, she always earns more bonus points for me.)

For me a cat would have to be a little that way, I have friends that have cats that totally ignore the owners and are like furniture pieces. Although they're a different animal than the dog, they should have a little affection.

I've been looking for almost a year for a TeaCup/miniature kitten breeder. I'm a huge cat fan & these tiny little guys are the cutest!!!
No such thing as a perfect pet for everyone. It depends what you are looking for. I have always been a dog lover but can see the attraction people have for other animals. I love terriers since they are spunky and independent as well as being loyal. Contradictory I know but that is their nature. These traits aren't for everyone and that is the point I am trying to make. Get a pet that suits your needs but if you get a pet be sure you will look after it.

If you're lucky. Some cats get bored and jump all over shit they know they shouldn't when left to their own devices. Some even get vengeful and fuck with your shit on purpose for "abandoning" them.
I know some people have cats that are like that but thankfully I've always had good ones. None of my cats over the years have been what you'd call independent. They've all come when they're called, loved to snuggle on the couch or in bed at night and been more dog like than cat like. Except for having to pick up the poop part. I just wish they'd live longer.
