Live At The Fillmore East 1971 - The Mothers

Ahhhhh!!! How could I have forgotten that gem!! 'B'wana Dik', 'Billy the Mountain'. Always loved when Flo (or was it Eddie?) sings 'My dick is a harley baby, you kick it to start'.

The "best" is a real toss up for me. Either Band of Gypsies or Live at the Filmore East. Others mentioned are really good but, for me, these were the best of the best.

Previously mentioned, but Nirvana's "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" is my favourite, with Aneurysm and Milk It my favourite cuts.

Followed closely by The Tragically Hip's Live Between Us. Springtime in Vienna my favourite song on that one.

Also very close to the top of my list of most annoying album ever made. It is not that good and got way, way too much airtime. I was so sick of it I would change stations if anything was played from it (still do just on principle).

My all time favourite live album is Little Feat's Waiting for Colombus. The song's on most live albums don't sound as good as they do on the studio version and some are barely recognizable. For me the song versions on Waiting for Columbus are better than that the studio versions, especially Fat Man in the Bathtub and Dixie Chicken.

An *awesome* album... the tower or power horns don't hurt either... I believe they did clean things up a bit after the fact though. A truly great band though... they could *play* (along with The Last Waltz... I probably play this live album more than any other). Another I play a lot is Jerry Jeff's Viva Terlingua...

Most live albums are remixed to some extent. The point is that they are generally recorded in a single take with all instuments played together, no overdubbing. This is what makes it so difficult to sound good and is a test of musicianship.

I agree with you, the "Tower of Power" horn section plays a huge part in this. Superb musicians and very tight. They were regularly voted the best horn section in Playboy's annual review of music.

This live album was among one of my favorites but hasn't been listed yet - most likely because thay sold out to the disco craze

Full House - J Giehls Band

Another live album this band did was called - Blow Your Face Out not bad but not as good as Full House.

Humble Pie

This thread can't be complete without mentioning "Rockin' the Fillmore" by Humble Pie. Steve Marriot at his finest! Simply one of the best hard rock albums ever made.

Also......Beck Bogert Appice live in Japan. Recorded in Osaka in '73. Jeff Beck (before he did the fusion thing) with a killer rhythm section. Listen to what they do with "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder.
