Windows defender is awesome, free always updates right away and lots of videos on YouTube if you need help.

Norton is a pain in the ass, I often wonder if the have 2 divisions, virus creation and antivirus division.

But back to the point windows defender is your best protection out there. Just make sure you always run updates either auto or manual.

I use two. I pay for Norton. It works well, never any issues and blocks alot.

I also use Spybot, which is free and is good for a second detection and cleaning up tracking cookies and the like.

Norton protects up to five devices. So I have it on two phones, two laptops and a pad. Well worth it.

What is the best free computer protection for a single windows home computer? Is a paid subscription to Norton necessary?

Cheers
You really don't need any anti virus software.
Windows comes with Windows Defender.

Just install an ad blocking program, to prevent pop ups and known malicious JavaScript from being run.
I use uBlock Origin (both on chrome and firefox), don't forget the origin part the one without is made by some guy with shady practices.
Don't go around installing random exe's or downloading stuff without doing your research.

It really comes down to your computing habits. Be wise what you download.
You can get free shit online without viruses if you are smart about it and use reputable pirate sites and groups.

Anti virus software is more trouble then it is actually worth. They all seem to run in the background and update without you wanting or scanning your system.
It is wasting resources on your PC and consequently slowing it down.

Also you can edit your hosts file. Which just blocks know adware and malware sites. This repo is updated frequently:

An alternative is installing and beginning to learn how to use a GNU/LINUX distribution.

I use arch btw!

I have used most of the free programs over the years...they all seem to start off lean and unobtrusive, but later become annoying with ads etc.
Currently I used Bitdefender, with manual scans once in a while using Malwarebytes.

For years for Windows been using free Avast, Malwarebytes and CCleaner with no problems. They do the job for the little I now use Windows.

For over 10 years now I've dumped Windows and now mainly use FREE Linux which IMHO is the best way to protect yourself on the www.
Linux is FREE, has bulletproof security and is as easy to learn as any Mac OS. Linux needs no anti-virus. In over 10 years of using Linux and hitting all the 'suspect' sites on the www I've had NO issues, got no virus, no malware, no spyware, no highjacks, no bugs etc! Linux just runs, oh and it's all FREE!

I use Linux for Kodi. It is a different type of operating system. Whether it is bullet proof or not, I cannot say. But yes, it is the best operating system if you are using Kodi. Not sure how certain programs like Excel, Word and Power Point would be able to function in Linux. Also, in the past when I was using my Blackberry Playbook, I found it to have a software that was fairly well shielded from viruses and malware. Did not have any antivirus software, as it was not required.

But Bitdefender is the best software and the best time to purchase it is during the Boxing Day sales at Best Buy. I got a 3 Year Bitdefender Total Security for around $60. It covers 5 different devices. Great value for your money.

GNU/Linux is often considered to have better security because to modify system files a root access is needed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware
In addition, just the market share, less people use it - so less people develop malicious software for it.
The alternative to Microsoft Office is LibreOffice, which is also available on windows.

Even though I disagree with the need to use anti-virus software, boxing day is the best time to purchase it.

Wanted to break completely away from M$. That was my main reason for switching to Linux.

Linux came with a complete Office suite of first OpenOffice then they moved to LibreOffice which works fine, in place of M$ Excel, Word and Power Point, etc. Never had any problems with either OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

Kind of gave up on Kodi which is under constant attack here in the USA. Ran pretty hit and miss down here.
How does Kodi 19 run now?

I am currently in the process of switching to Bitdefender, using their 0ne month free trial and will buy either the 2 0r 3 year package they offered me. Same program as bver_h and cost the same. Like the software as it is user friendly and appears to offer real good protection. Customer service Okay but slow, IMO!

a knowledgeable user that doesn't click random links in emails or browser and spybot for malware with manual weekly scans. Sophos Home Anti-Virus is good too.

Bitdefender also offers a VPN for around $50 per annum. Purchased the Hotspot Shield that they partnered with, but ran into a lot of glitches is the first few months. It works well now. However, when you visit certain sites, they always demand to know whether you are not a robot. That is the only annoying part. Will not renew this VPN, as it does not support gadgets like the Android Box, Kodi or even Roku.
