Rome 1966 Benvenuti vs Fullmer - In his middleweight debut, Benvenutti went the full 12 for a decision.

Ali wasn't just a character. Butterbean is a character. Ali for his time was a poet, an egomaniacal, hard tapping, fast moving, smart thinking pugilist, who had character. He was way ahead of his time when it came to boxing strategy -adapting in the ring and certainly a marketing genius. With all the interviews and the outward bravado he was very close with another man of the mouth -Cosell. But Ali could back his claims and fight the good fight.

I heard those rumors at one time, and I certainly wouldn't doubt it; given Listons'....lifestyle choices and his proclivity for hanging around individuals with questionable moral and definite criminal ties. But I did see old clips from that fight and I spoke to a local (Toronto native) boxer who was very close to the scene in the 60's and asked him about those rumors. He assured me that there was true animosity between Liston and Clay at the time and Liston was too much of a hard case to have thrown that particular fight. The origin of those rumors were never really verified, was it a bet, the Nation of Islam, his mafioso friends, nobody will ever know but it was still a great fight.
Saw the fight on CBC actually, they replayed it a while back for some reason or another and in it's entire run -wow. It's like watching a train wreck.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the eras where Dempsey, Louis, Robinson, etc. reigned. It's weird watching some of those clips. Some of the fighters are half dead and the ref is lifting them up off the canvas to continue fighting. Really fun to watch Dempsey though. He had a modern approach to fighting (stance, duck and rolls, uses his whole body in a punch, etc.) while most of his opponents are standing upright (older style of fighting).
