So Anthony Parker is a swingman? John Salmons a veteran swingman?

What does that mean, do these guys like Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey?

Swingman is a player that can play more than one position on the floor ie small forward and shooting guard.

Swingman is a player that can play multiple positions????????

Not the last time I checked...I thought that a swingman was a player that has played in many many places (ie a journeyman)...For example, he played for a few NBA teams before he went to Europe and Israel...

I'm pretty confident that I'm correct...

Could be that they swing from both sides of the plate.... umm... nope baseball

maybe they swing both ways....

maybe they are swingers... professional athletes have hot wives... I would join that swingers club so that I could fuck their wives...

Blot has it correct... Swingmen can play more than one position and are usually slashers that can shoot or shooters that can go the hoop as well..

I think you lost this one.... A guy that has placed in many places without really making an big impact is a journeyman...

Swingman means that they can "swing" between two positions... giving them extra versatility to take advantage of mismatches...

yes, usually an "inbetween" player that can play both small forward and off guard. Implies versatility due to the different skills required to play those positions (defence, shooting, slashing, passing, running the break, spacing the floor). Although the term has been given a more liberall use over the last few years as everyone (even 7 footers) try to do the flashy stuff.

My high school coach would threaten to break our fingers if we did fingerroll layups... even if we had a breakaway layup and did a fingerroll, we would be running lines the next practice....

Layup using the backboard is less risky.....he did not like showing off or hotdogging.... Even if we were just playing pick up in the gym and he noticed us showboating.... we were doing quarters.....

Great guy, great coach... believed in the "When I say Jump" you say "how high" approach to coaching.... Fundamentals, Fundamentals, Fundamentals.....

I agree. a backboard layup also is higher, reducing the risk of an unexpected block and increases the chance of a good rebound if it misses. Waaay too many hotdogs playing pros now. They should move the three point line back as too many shooter rely on 33% shooting to get by.

I believe the same bashing preceded

Mike James last season too, he was albeit known to be a shooter.

I think if you're TJ Ford fast then the expectation is he'll get his assists on the break.... a la J. Kidd. (comparison stops there, before i get attacked).

If he goes to the basket the dishes to Rasho, Bosh, and AB will be easy assists too............but you're still right...

a little more diffiicult to go to the basket if opposing teams lay off you to protect the drive allowing you open shots.

swingman = a guy that plays the shooting guard and small forward position

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/swingman

The dictionary.com definition is a bit more general but people who play guard and forward tend to play the two positions I mentioned...... not many SG/PF or PG/PFs in the league or history of the game.

Was TJ THE BEST PG out there? No.

Is he one of the better PGs available? Yes.

Do you know that if you unscrable elegantangel, you get glen granwald (ok.. i'm stretching to get there...).... Obviously Colangelo seems to think Ford is his best option... seems to me that JKidd has been pretty successful without being a great shooter, JWilliams won a Championship without possessing a great shot... Remember Dennis Johnson from the Celtics glory days.... OMG... It was sickening... I am a celtics fan, but I even cringed watching him shoot...

If Ford is still very quick, can lead the fast breaks, and make good passes off the dribble then we might have something.... Barganini is proving that he can shoot from the outside... Parker will hopefully prove to be a player, and Nesterovic has a nice touch for a big man.... So there are plenty of shooters on the team.... But Ford will have to prove that he can drill a few shots from the outside.

Good coach...

It may seem like a small thing to attack the hotdogging antics, but for a youngster in development, being lax with the fundamentals can ultimately lead to many bad habits. Remember the saying, "if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile".

Too many schools in the GTA, and well known basketball schools at that, allow the players to have way too much power. The "let us do things our way or we don't play" mentality (especially when it comes to practices), has to stop. The emphasis on winning can really kill a good coach if his employers refuse to support his methods. And that goes for more than just basketball...
