Yeah was just thinking choking hazard so that's why I would wait a bit on Lego till sure 4 or 5.

Tinker Toys, Meccano, Kinex are also good too. But again for older kids.

Lincoln Logs might be good for younger guys and gals as well.

My friend is 7 months pregnant and I want to get her something. What should I get her and does it matter if I before or after the baby is born?
Something missing here. I'll assume you meant, ". . if I shag her before or after . ."

I always say it's safer to leave it until you get home.

Even more so if you're not the father.

No lego, it restricts thinking to straight lines.
Give a child a pocket knife for whittling and a harmonica to express their feelings.

What I usually buy new parents, is a coin set from the year the child was born. It can just be a basic set with un circulated coins for friends, or one with the gold and silver coins for good friends or family. Ive been giving these out for years and have had positive feedback from the parents.

Canadian medical association used to make a book with common child symptoms, and guidelines on what to do, when it might be serious, etc. Worth it for new parents battling fevers etc for the first time.

Two good long term gift suggestions: www.oneshare.com , where you can buy the kid one share of Disney, Pixar, Harley etc. nicely framed with inscription of your choice.

Other is www.damhorsttoys.com where they make wooden stools and other item w the kids name in it. You can do a personalized inscription on the bottom.

I always buy the same gift. 2 large cans of enfermal ( or something like that) the baby formula that doesn't have a lot of iron in it... No one ever complains.

Pay for a photographer.
Great idea! Unless the couple knows him/her well already, you might want to get a package for when the kid is bit older. The 3-day old pics can be pretty intimate.

Good Night Moon every child needs this book
Another great idea...a timeless classic :) Oddly, my kid loves his ipad, but when it comes to reading, he insists on hardcopy! Books are cool!

Silver spoon from Tiffany
As a keepsake, why not? I like to give keepsakes that (hopefully) the kid will hang on to for life. My go-to baby gift is something from the sterling silver piggybank collection from Birks. Affordable and memorable.

Enfamil? Also a good idea, but not everyone is into formula. Especially at the newborn stage, some overprotective parents insist on the premixed stuff (sterile). And of course, there are the crazy boob-juice-only parents.....

A giant pack of diapers and/or wipes from Costco would also be very practical.

This is an excellent idea. My children received Disney shares and we had unlimited free day passes along with substantial hotel discounts into the park until they were 18. I think starting a baby off with an investment is the way to go. Lola's suggestions of Molly Maid, diaper services and such are also excellent along with GC's for take out dinners and spas are a really thoughtful and useful gesture. Practical gifts that don't collect dust or require selling or donating later and will make life a little easier in the beginning are by far the most appreciated...

Wipes.... Gets her a ton of wipes.... Diapers they'll grow out of but she'll always need wipes (the thick ones). A bottle warmer, one of those nursing pillows, a great diaper bag.... Or just get a gift card to babies r us, so she can use it toward something nice. You could go in on a larger gift with some other people and get her something really nice. Joggers are fantastic! If she doesnt have one, she needs one! Lol. Glidders are great too... SO are steam cleaners for really cleaning up puke in fabric that can't be washed or even a slow cooker! It's really hard to cook healthy meals when your exhausted and new moms tend to snack a lot rather than eat healthy meals, i think it would be nice if she doesnt have one. She could also cook meals for the baby when he starts solids a baby bullet is also another good gift.
