When in Cuba...
I just got back from Cuba, I go quite often. Racism is an ugly part of Cuban life. However, don't let this discourage you because YOU are not Cuban. This attitude will only apply within themselves. Knowing that you are a tourist, you will be treated as such, never as a Cuban national. A Cuban can spot a 'turista' a mile away, don't know how they do it but they have astoundingly accurate 'Tourist Radar'. That's the most important thing to them. It over rides all.

Colleague of mine was jailed 32 months for not checking into a government approved hotel. The guy makes pizza for a living and saved up 2 years for that shit. Thats too damn much policing for my taste. Cuba and Peru and Colombia and everything like it is off my Travel plans for life. Not worth the risk.
There must be more to this storey!!!!!!!!!! please tell.........Holy - 32 months??? There's no way that can be right. I've been to Cuba over 10 times and I've never stayed at a gov approved hotel. I always do have the address of the casa and that's good enough for me.WhaWhaWha said:
I think there's more to it - Cuba depends on tourism to survive. They don't send tourists to prison lightly.

Heard of people having to stay in Cuba until their court date after being in a traffic accident where someone was hurt. Believe we do the same with tourists here in Canada for some offences.

I speculate there will be a big jump in #s...for 3 or 4 years, as Americans arrive in hordes to satisfy their curiosity. After that...it'll settle down as people start to classify Cuba as "just another Caribbean" destination. Really, beyond cigars and beaches, I don't see what else Cuba can offer for the average joe-blow that other Caribbean destinations can't. In some ways, Cuba going communist was a good thing for places like Mexico, DR and Jamaica, because that gave them time to develop their industries.hd12 said:
