Renting a car in Cuba: definitely a *BAD* idea. Why? See below:

"Traffic accidents are a frequent cause of arrest and detention of Canadians in Cuba. Accidents resulting in death or injury are treated as crimes, and the onus is on the driver to prove innocence. Regardless of the nature of the accident, it can take five months to a year for a case to go to trial. In most cases, the driver will not be allowed to leave Cuba until the trial has taken place. In some cases, he will be imprisoned during this delay."

That being said, having a car is one of the best ways to pick up random chicks in Cuba. It's very common among Cubans and since it happens out of police sight, you might get some good non-pro action - esp if you know Spanish well.

Colombia is not too bad if you call Avianca (the Colombian national airline) and see what deals you can get. Flights are also $200-300 cheaper if you fly from Buffalo. Price works out to the same as flying to Cuba, (approx $700) unless you get a last minute special to Cuba for $250.

Hola Amigo!

I too am a Cuban addict and had a great connection in Havana. Problem is that I referred ONE guy from Terb to him and the guy got into a dispute with a chica. The chica went to the police and the cops made an example of my connection.

He is STILL in jail (3 years now) and his house was torn apart, his pool filled in and his money ALL taken.

I'd take down your friend's number for a couple reasons.

1. If Cuban intelligence ever see this web page and he really is the guy you say, they will take him straight to jail.

2. You don't know who is an asshole or not here on TERB so it is not worth putting your friend at risk. I'm not saying anyone IS an asshole bu this is a public place with a wide open public presence. There are stalkers and weirdos all around. Not cool to post this guy's number and exp[ose him to that risk.

Anyways, what is the atmosphere like in Havana right now in terms of hooking up without the girls being afraid. I've not been back in two years.
1. Your ''connection'' is not in jail

2.Cuban intelligence is not interested in TERB

3. You are something else.

Raul (the new guy in charge) has recently decided to liberalize certain aspects of society by allowing Cuban guests into hotels and opening up cellphone ownership to Cubans...ordinary liberties to us but previously forbidden in Cuba.

Perhaps this is the beginning...

Do the authorities there still frown upon the local girls there seen in public places with tourists (streets, outdoor cafes, etc.)?

As of my last visit (Dec 07), I noticed a lot less cuban-tourist couples especially in the more touristed areas, which tend to have more heavy police action. But in the other areas like the beach, I saw a lot more of tourist-cuban couples...but there was substantially less policia. Cubans will take any chance they can get to hook up with a tourist since their monthly salary is only $20 at the most.

So Raul has allowed cubans to stay in hotels now. Does that mean that they can rent a room? Even if allowed, highly doubtful that they can AFFORD it anyway. Or... does it mean that you, as a tourist, can now bring cuban guests back to your room, which you were NEVER allowed to do any way.

I was staying in Havana, my friends and I met Girls at the clubs. Went with them at there tourist homes, rooms by the hr. $30 convertible pesos, almost on par Canadian.

The next day we invited them back at Hotel Ocentantial, nice btw. cost was $40. to register day pass for the hotel, the girls had to look respectful not sleezy, these spinner cute 20 year old's eat like horses, had to leave at 11pm. Could not allow to go to the rooms. $50 for security to look the other way if you wanted too take a chance.

Hotel's concern was guests getting robbed. This was back in Feb.08. Have not heard anything else has changed.

Hey, Eldoguy, Gracias

I thought so. Even though now cubans can stay in their own hotels, they still can NEVER AFFORD it. It seems like more political grandstanding to look progressive, but same old, same old. Govt. is perfectly aware of this. I usually get the package Flight/Hotel but still rent an apartment. This way my stuff is safe back at hotel and I keep my playpen apart. In reality, they are only obliged by law to charge $10.00 a night. I usually get to $20.00 from $30.00 or $25.00. Depends on length of stay. There are some good deals right now. I never found it hard to meet any chicas ANYWHERE in Cuba. La Habana has lots of 'city' stuff and tons of chicas. In the Malecon there is a mixture of all, pros and non-pros, but generally there is always huge variety. Just gotta do some sorting. Paseo del Prado seems like the marker. Non-pros but eager chicas don't want to be seen west of Prado where it gets more trafficked. They're afraid to be seen by frinds in that part and labelled "jineteras". They're on the other side where there is more park and cafes, a little darker and more discreet. More non-pros on week-ends, obviously makes sense. Then again, they're all over the place anyway. Nothing sweeter than a non-pro when you invite her to dinner then over to your place. Sweet, attentive, sexy and at your command. You catch more flies with Honey than Vinegar.

Hey Bridgeman, having a hotel and a guesthouse is a common strategy. What I usually do though...is keep all valuables away (better yet, don't bring them) and also use a hardshell suitcase that locks tight.

Never had any success on the Malecon myself. Maybe I was there at the wrong time? When was your last trip?

Hey manoflegend...it's my pleasure contributing when I've benefited from the reviews posted in terb.

Not sure of lockers in the hotel...never stayed in a cuban hotel before, sorry! You could also go the route of lifting the mattress on your side and stashing the cash under the mattress. Hopefully the mattress doesn't move too much in the festivities...*wink*

Rental Cars

I have rented cars over 20 times and have never had any problems.

The pros are on the Malecon, more normal girls on Linea and 23 in Vedado.

I think prices on the Malecon are less than what you quoted, probably more like $20 to $40.

Aside from car accidents, what type of activities can get a guy arrested? Particularly with respect to picking up hookers? Thanks. Good thread.

Regarding driving, taken from the DFAIT website:

http://www.voyage.gc.ca/dest/report-en.asp?country=69000

===================

Canadians should avoid driving in Cuba; driving conditions can be hazardous. Signs are scarce. Bicycles, pedestrians, and horse-drawn carts use the middle of the road and do not readily give way to oncoming vehicles. Many vehicles are old and poorly maintained. Inoperable vehicles are often left on the road until repaired. Few roads are lit and vehicles rarely have lights or reflectors. If you must drive, drive defensively at all times and avoid driving after dark. The Autopista Central (national highway), which runs half the length of the island, is generally in good condition. Other roads are generally poor. The highway between the Guardalavaca hotels and the Holguín airport is particularly dangerous. Allowing hitchhikers into your vehicle is not advised.

Traffic accidents are a frequent cause of arrest and detention of Canadians in Cuba. Accidents resulting in death or injury are treated as crimes, and the onus is on the driver to prove innocence. Regardless of the nature of the accident, it can take five months to a year for a case to go to trial. In most cases, the driver will not be allowed to leave Cuba until the trial has taken place. In some cases, he will be imprisoned during this delay.

Canadians should be cautious when renting a vehicle in Cuba. Although insurance is offered, coverage differs from that in Canada. If the traveller is in any way at fault in an accident, rental agencies will nullify coverage and seek damages to cover the cost of repairs. Contract agreements do not cover occasional drivers and the signatory is responsible for all people driving the vehicle. Rental agencies are government-controlled and can prevent your departure from the country unless payment is obtained. Charges associated with accidents can range in the thousands of U.S. dollars.

======================

Remember, when you're in Cuba, you're subject to THEIR laws. Don't mistake Havana for Oshawa!
