I'm strictly rock/ alternative and indie music but I appreciate good music whatever the genre. I've never been a "fan" of rap music, aside from the odd group like Outkast, Public Enemy and going back, Rob Base. Oddly, the older I get, the more I seem to be liking rap music but I think it has more to do with the fact there is better and better rap music. Guys like K-OS, Kanye (who is a douche but his music is good), Drake, TI, Lil Wayne, etc. I'm hearing really innovative stuff pushing the envelope, not the generic crap that's been clogging the airwaves previously.

I think it's a case of peaks and valleys. We were in a valley for a while and some of the new(er) stuff is better. Rap really became quite a joke with all the bling-bling and "look how rich I am" (when really they don't own any of it, lol!).

To the original question...NO.

Drake is terrible, Lil Wayne loves the synthesizer a bit too much and is everywhere and anywhere and that's a bad thing. New Ludacris is just terrible too. That's my mini rant.

I think it's a case of getting used to Rap. It's like when you notice a really bad smell. You can't stand it at first, but over time it doesn't bother you as much. Not to say there aren't some really good rap songs, but for the most part it's pretty awful.

Asking about rap to the mostly Q107, Stairway to Heaven crowd on this board is equal to asking for fitness advice on a fat guy forum :D

but anyways the whole bling bling, four letter word every other line, calling women horrible names routine that rap has gone through is what bothers me. I work with the yungins everyday and tell them about how great rap groups like Public Enemy or A Tribe Called Quest managed to get through an entire 4 minute song without including any of the above, and they are thinking wow really!!! hehehe

"Golden Age of Rap"? Isn't that sort of like saying "The Golden Age of MacDonald's Food"?;)

I'm no fan of MacDonald's, haven't touched it in probably over 15 years but think MacDonald's food is still better than Rap...

What he said.....plus that 4 minute song actually had a message. Also add Eric B & Rakim and of course RUN DMC to the list of great rap groups.

not even close my man.. the golden age of rap was the late 80's and early to mid 90s
rap is so garbage now its not even funny.. there are very few artists who actually put out decent stuff now.. quite a shame..
today its all about the beat and not so much the content and flow..

Today's rap is good in the same way hair metal was in the 80s. It's a fun watered down version of the genre. Def Leoppard was fun but they weren't Led Zepplin. This is why it's no surprise that older guys in the thread are starting to enjoy it.

90s was the golden era of rap. I enjoy conscious rap as well as straight G shit so long as it sounds good. In the 90s you got plenty of both.

They don't make them like this anymore (what I love, what the new fans probably hate):

Excellent post...anyone that actually listens to hip hop knows that the 90's were the golden age of rap
