Walk in freezers should have an alarm system which can be activated from the inside in case one is somehow "locked in".

I remember years ago working at a resort that had one. It is damn cold inside! You had to wear a winter jacket when stocking it.

Yup. As mentioned. Upper management ignored the requests to fix the broken latch. Sounds just like them. They'll probably get it fixed now. Once they finish finger pointing at subordinates.

Yeah, considering the potential for tragedy, these walk-in freezers should have back-up safety mechanisms.

OSHA Requirements for Walk-in Doors
OSHA regulation 1910.36(d)(1)4 requires in part that, "Employees must be able to open an exit route door from the inside at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge." To comply with this, manufacturers include an interior release mechanism on walk-in cooler and freezer doors that's designed to let anyone inside the unit to open the door if it becomes locked. Although the mechanism differs between manufacturers, the typical design enables the person to unscrew the locking system and push the door open. This mechanism may glow in the dark or be marked by a light directly above it so it's easier to find in a dark walk-in.
