bbking,

There is no question I want to be successful in a career. I think that is fairly normal. I want to make sure I earn enough to afford the things I want, which include being able to raise a family comfortably. This city is expensive, and I've even contemplated moving out of Toronto. I'm prepared for the responsibility that goes along with higher positions too. I know I have to lead by example, and unlike most managers, I do put subordinates first as I know being in a leadership position requires sacrifice.

I'm not too interested in the glamourous lifestyle though. A good career to me is a means to an end. I leave my designations off my business card. While I enjoy a lunch at Canoe or Jump as much as the next guy when the company is picking up the bill, I won't go there by myself for lunch to be seen or just because I feel like it or because they are popular places.

I'd like a Corvette one day, but not to impress others. More for myself. I like hot rodding cars and racing them down the quarter mile. Fixing and racing cars has been a 15 year hobby. A used Corvette is a goal of mine, and part of the reason I drive a 277,000 km 90 Chev Beretta is because I was trying to save for one. I was hoping a 2000 with 50,000 for under $30,000. Prices like that may happen this winter, but my purchase may not because I am still looking for a job.

Every job is a learning experience and I don't mind the variety of different tasks, different people and challenges. I just wish it all happened in the same organization so I don't lose out on pensionable time and go through periods of unemployment.

bbking,

I do treat subordinates well, but they still know who's boss. Alot of habits are left over from the military. There, the Officers are the last to eat at mealtime. I make sure they have the resources to do the job and set realistic deadlines. The problems I have ever comes from below, always from above.

I have run across very few good managers. Leadership really isn't something that is taught in the school system, and in the business world, people are forced to look out for number one.

I've never been to community college. I do hold an MBA, but have no desire to get a PHD. I upgraded two courses earlier this year and feel I do have a learning mentality.

It may be the type of organization I am working in. I am considering applying to the police because there is more camradarie, security, action and chances to actually directly help people.

I have lost as much as I have won.....success is not defined by money or material goods or even power.....it is defined by how happy you feel about your life and all the furry creatures and friends you have met along the way

...well I was going to add that I'm rich enough that i don't ever have to work....so I can spew that crap out about success not defined by power or money....but I thought it would lose the hallmark flavour

What was your occupation bbking?

Hehehe.

All I can say is some women like Corvettes, some don't. I really don't care either way if women like my car. If I did, I probably wouldn't have bought a Grand National. I like Corvettes because they are relatively easy to work on, have alot of aftermarket support, fairly dependable and are a reasonable price used. I've read they are noisy, and they apparently improved that on the C6.

Grand National was produced for several years. 86 & 87 were the two fastest years because they were intercooled.

They were a muscle car, so you could say they went like stink in a straight line. I'm down to 11.82 @ 114 mph. They could seat 5, pull .80 on the skid pad with tiny 215 mm tires and have held thier value better than any Camaro, Mustang or Corvette of its day.

I still want to know how you get 11.82 out of a heavy Buick, though I think poorboy tried to explain it to me before. How many horsepower do you think you were making?

peelcowboy,

I am actually thinking of a career switch right now. I have an application in with the RCMP. Going out on my own in business has crossed my mind. I have no idea what to get into though.

C. Dick and baci2004,

It's still a v6 and 11.82 isn't really that fast for this car. I figure I am making 350hp at the wheels. Check out turbobuick.com

I went googling, and the first site I found was an 87 GN with basically stock engine, just a bigger turbo, and it was 11.77. Sounds like poorboy's is similar. It must be making more power, to move something that heavy and square that fast?

Figure out how to become self-employed in your own existing field and there is a good chance your life will change.

not everyone is cut out to be an entreupeneur, you have to have either a service or merchandise to market and the drive to suceed independently .

If I remember correctly the "HyperTech" chip played a large role in the speed of that car. Wasn't there like 5 stages you upgrade to? The 5th being for track use only. Also, didn't the car come with a govenor so that it couldn't go beyond 140mph?
