Was in Buffalo perusing what the thrift stores had to offer in terms of LP's. I came home happy, having found about 15 albums of interest.
Ponderling, you're leaving us in the learch, what were some of these LP's of interest? You need good drugs to listen to Beethoven's late String Quartets, he was completely deaf when he wrote them.

That's quite an eclectic mix there ponderling. I have several London Phase 4 recordings including Stokowski somewhat erratic transcriptions. His two Fantasia pieces are hit and miss, his Night on Bald Mountain with his own finale is excellent but his Bach BWV 565 doesn't really work with a full orchestra...too turgid. I'm assuming the last vinyl you mentioned are the George Szell recording?

Bots control everything these days, I don't use them. Wrote a critical piece on how Canadians play Berg's Piano Sonata better than their peers across the pond. Europeans take the work too literal, sounding cold and mechanical, Berg hadn't gone full atonal when he wrote it. The Canadians in question are Glenn Gould and Marc Andre Hamelin. They take entirely different approach to the music, both are exceptional. Gould is far less analytical with the work almost like Gustav Klimt were playing it.

Any mention of Gould always gets a response. He's been gone for 41 years yet remains the most revered Canadian by musicians.

It's been awhile since I've heard anything from Swedish Mezzo-soprano Annie Sofie Von Otter. In the late 80's and 90's with her amazing voice and heart breaker good look, she was a sensation. As I've said before a woman's looks and personality merge as she ages, Ms Von Otter may be in her 60's now but she's still fuckin hot!

I would buy her a pizza.

I might buy her a pizza too, but these videos of impromptu singers, violinists, etc., that suddenly ask the guy playing the piano if he knows XXXX is totally staged.

No professional or semi-professional singer/violinist/etc. would ever take a chance on being accompanied on the piano by any dude who is playing on a public piano to give a free performance.
The chances of the pianist not knowing the song or screwing up the song is high, and the singer/violinist knows that, and would never take that chance.
No matter how good the singer/violinist is, if the accompanist screws up, it still makes the singer/violinist look bad.

Completely staged videos.

Is there a Christmas music thread?

The city pool had on CHFI this week , and they are currently all Christmas music.
That got me thinking. Swimming is a great time to organize your thoughts.

There are good and bad recordings of these standards worthy of discussion.
Not sure all of them have YouTube versions, but I bet a lot of them do and IV will find them.

Not into Christmas music, it's suicide inducing.

Jason and the Argonauts stands the test of time, not just because of Ray Harryhausen's pioneering special effects. I recently learned that the film was directed by Don Chaffey who was also working on The Avengers TV Series. At the time that the film came out Honor Blackman (Goldfinger) was still John Steed's muse. Dianna Rigg took over on S4. I was 9 years old when I saw Talos come to life for the first time, never forgot it. The sound effects have been edited out to focus on Bernard Herrman's score.

xix's villains suite is mostly original music, still don't know who the composers are? Another "spontaneous" sing along, this time it's the Italian rice harvesters protest song.

I Believe in Father Christmas (Lake, Sinfield, Prokofiev)

I almost dreaded bringing up Peter Sinfield bio, if he's no longer with us I didn't want to know. I'm happy to report he's still alive and kicking. I Believe in Father Christmas is a monumental holiday favorite that can be enjoyed year round. Sinfield is a lyricist, his partnership with Greg Lake went back to The Court of the Crimson King. Classical music is in the public domain, Sergei Prokofiev deserves a songwriting credit since the bridge music comes from his Lieutenant Kije Suite.

It helps that Peter Sinfield lives in Ibiza.
