Guy does nothing wrong, his reputation is sullied by the woke mob and can't teach the class he seemingly wanted to teach. It all worked out just groovy.
The article implies he was reinstated. "The investigation into the professor ended without fanfare on September 25. The university’s Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX concluded there was no ill intent on Patton’s part and that “the use of the Mandarin term had a legitimate pedagogical purpose.” In a follow-up email to students and faculty, the dean appeared to tiptoe between concerns of the complainants and the strong opinions of faculty and students. Garrett described the complaint letter as “genuine and serious,” apologized for appearing to prejudge Patton, and assured students and faculty that he meant to cast no aspersions “on specific Mandarin words or on Mandarin generally.”

He is also still on the university web-site too: https://www.marshall.usc.edu/personnel/greg-patton

But yes, I agree that he should not have been suspended in the first place and the dean jumped the gun on that.

The bigger issue, which many can't see is who helped create the woke mob? CNN / MSNBC, Facebook, etc. are popular targets, but there is a much bigger and older institution that helped create it.

Thanks for proving my earlier point. You are so conditioned to look at the shiny ball of cancel culture that nothing else can enter your mind.

Actually, it's just thinking. It is challenging, but maybe try it sometime.
Thanks, you just gave me an epiphany. I have already tracked down two of my high school teachers from decades ago and are suing them for gross negligence. I put in minutes of homework every night, this was in no way my fault. They will pay for this!!!!

It really is a funny commentary on reality

We cry about how "poor disadvantaged" blacks do so poorly in school
Yet somehow other immigrant / refugee groups manage to get ahead with hard work

Instead mentioning the fact that "the blacks" have higher dropout rates and are less likely to graduate is somehow racist
So we can't confront the issues, can't comment on them, but its cool to look at issue high level simply to talk about the systemic racism

Never seen a more absurd idea
Do not try and conform to system, instead complain the system is against you
What the prof did was complain. I'm just asking some tough questions, which isn't the same as complaining.

Now that we've got to the so-called truth that blacks do so poorly in school then what do we want do about it? Anyone have any real ideas here? Anyone? Anyone?

It's these tough questions that will have a big impact on issues like crime, poverty, etc. I don't pretend to have answers, but why aren't we and the education system even asking them? On one side you have people fixated on racism (and I actually don't care what she said) and the other side fixated on cancel culture. But that isn't the problem guys.

The rest of the students seemed to adapt fine to her teaching methods. Let's hear from the passing students if she's a terrible teacher instead of the oft offended snowflakes on here.

Why do you think that asking questions equals taking offence? I actually don't care about what she said, but she obviously knew it was a brain fart before she opened her mouth. Otherwise, she would not have to qualify with "hate to say it..." I would hope these incidents would trigger intelligent discussion about what's really going on in the education system, but it's sad that we can't move forward.

For one semester. He's teaching the class again.
If the "WOKE PEOPLE ARE DESTROYING EVERYTHING" people didn't freak out, would we even know his name?

This is so low on the list of things I feel I should be worried about.

If it happened to you-being investigated/losing a class for doing absolutely nothing wrong-you'd be ok with it?

The system is rigged and not in a good way. This teacher showed a lack of judgement if self-preservation is her first instinct in protecting her job in the current climate. If saying the obvious or the the "truth" from her perspective would get her terminated, then is it worth it ? There are many others with her mindset who keep their mouths shut because they have bills to pay, maybe she just works for a hobby? She also many be a poor teacher according to the students that she feels are inferior. Has anyone asked them?

At the end of the day, Georgetown University is a corporation and a business and that professor is simply bad for business in today's America . Actually America is moving further and further from becoming great again with each year.

I'd be really pissed off.
And if I got be fired I'd probably sue.
But if my Dean came to me and said, "Look. This shit has blown up, we need to investigate. I am taking you off this one class to turn the temperature down, but you still teach the rest of your course load and we are going to do this as fairly as we can," I'd put up with it. Shit comes up, and an institution tries to de-escalate it.

Say I get accused of grade fixing. They would take me off that course, too, while they investigate. I would also be pissed that someone accused me of grade-fixing. It's the same thing, has nothing to do with "wokeness run amok".

We completely disagree on that one. This is pure wokeist stupidity. The poor guy said a Chinese word that means "that" and isn't allowed to teach his course anymore. Woke stupidity. The entire class loses out too b/c from what I gather, he was a great prof.

Yes, it's dumb.
But "the class got pissed because of something dumb and now the whole situation is fucked" isn't anything I'm concerned about. It fucking happens sometimes.

I have yet to encounter one of these "wokeness run amok" stories that is worth the outrage people have over them.

Hold on a sec. Where did you get the idea that he is not allowed to teach that particular class anymore? I don't see any evidence of that in the earlier article. The article does not go into further detail other than:

The investigation into the professor ended without fanfare on September 25. His profile is still on USC's web-site, which suggests that he is still teaching. Unless you have some new information?

From an honest opinion?
I think poverty and homelife are things that are not easy to change

They may all be stereotypes but they are for the most part true

A black kid has a broken family
A non black kid has 2 parents

A black kid shares a room and has no dedicated study space for school
A non black kid has his own study space

Black parents stay home on welfare (even in Canada, Natives are only other race even close, and they have their own demons to deal with)
Non black parents work asses off to get ahead (Asians in particular are famous for 12 hour days)

There are so many examples

I do not care if the black kid is the smartest kid in the room
He has already started his life at a huge disadvantage

But milking it for pity and screaming everyone else is racist is not going to fix the issues
They need to seriously make major changes in their own community instead of blaming everyone else
(There are more descendants of free blacks than of slave blacks, yet somehow they all jump on the bandwagon)

I'm sure I read they found someone else to finish off teaching that specific course but can't remember where I saw that link.

They definitely needed another prof to finish the course while Patton was suspended. That's not the same as him never being able to teach it again. It's not a small detail.

I agree that people ultimately need to take personal responsibility for their own actions. That applies to everyone though: students, educators, government, police, everyone. We're all part of that solution because it's going to affect us all.

I disagree with the notion that you just need to work harder to gain success. We've all been in situations where it might seem we're not making progress no matter how hard we work. So we need teachers that can guide people on how to work not just putting effort in.

This is also the truth. Everyone grits their teeth to some degree at jobs or clients they hate because they have bills to pay and mouths to feed. You obviously find that truth distasteful or even offensive, but you've been there too.

The Seuss crowd seems to avoid the reality that the school wouldn't fire her without cause. Her comments and the school's response makes it likely that this wasn't the first issue.
