Tell us. LOL.
It'll have to wait. I keep hooking up with women who speak a foreign language(s). Ukrainian, Polish, Italian, Farsi, Spanish and the list goes on. I don't understand what they are saying, except occasionally I hear my name.

There were these two Persian sisters and I know when they switch to Farsi they are talking about me. Both of them are born in Canada and speak perfect English but they switch to Farsi every now and then. When I ask what they are saying they say "nothing", just "sister talk". LOL

Reason that many Ukrainians are found mainly in Manitoba and Saskatchewan goes back to the late 1800s when the Canadian Government offered them Free land if they would immigrate to those provinces and become full time farmers. My grandparents on both my parents side came to Canada, both had about 10 children each and most stayed out west to also become farmers. Many married within their race as my parents did. I was born in western Manitoba and my parents were the first of all their siblings to move to Toronto while the majority of my aunts and uncles and their children remained out west and continue to farm the land.
From what I remember, immigrants to Canada in the pre 1950 period were selected by ethnic stereotype. If you were Brit, the doors were open wide. IIRC my dad had his air fare paid to come over. He was Brit and a doctor in his early 30's with 2 kids - an immigration officer's dream A-type immigrant. Some other ethnic groups were seen as "do-able", including Ukrainians to farm out west.

That thinking died out in the 50's and was superseded by the points system.

Wonder if those folks who call themselves American or Canadian know that citizenship and ethnicity are not always the same?

No it did not die out, and is still in place. Canadians are unaware of how racist Canada Immigration is. Two examples:

When I arrived at the Immigration office on University Avenue for my Interview, the Immigration officer greeted me with: "Ah, it is so nice to see somebody who looks like you"

If a person from South Africa wants a tourist visa, a white person will get it through the travel agency, a black or coloured person will have to travel to the Consulate in Pretoria to apply, and will likely be asked to supply a medical examination.

In 2021 Canada, you are just as likely to get a yellow, brown and/or black officer. It is government (and the banks) policy to hire people who look like the people in the community they serve. I get flyers from City of Toronto in 20 languages.

The second example I gave is recent.

Not familiar enough with South Africa comment.

I have a fairly close friend who has been going through the citizen process for about a year now. he has been a permanent resident for many years but not a Canadian citizen. It appears Canada's policy is to have a balanced mix of different ethnicity and skills.

Quebec runs their own immigration system and the emphasis is on people who speak French. Hence, many immigrants from Haiti, Tunisia, Morocco, etc.

So you're saying that different ethnicities have inherently different skills based on their ethnicity? Hmmm.

And here's a song exactly about that by the Band.

Absolutely right, I have been to New Orleans, one of my very favourite American cities and went to a cajun dancehall where a live band played their type of music including a washboard. Thought I was in New Brunswick. Acadian Driftwood by the Band is one great song.
