An Unusually High Amount Of People Are Moving Out Of Canada, Half Of Them Are Ontarians, And It Could Mean Our Economy Is Slipping

For personal reasons the States would be the last choice on my list.
Not thinking of moving anywhere, but really, why would anyone choose the US over say, Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas, Cayman Islands just to name a few?
There are lots of Canadians working in the States. I meet a lot of them and they are happy here.

I wouldn't retire here, but parts of South Florida fly the Quebec flag all winter long.

In my experience a lot of people would choose to move
south given the opportunity. In the years I spent in schools
more than a few post-graduate students on visa settled
here only because they were unable to gain entry to the states.
I know of a guy who moved his dinky company from Kitchener to
Florida not for better business opportunity but for the comfort
in warmer weather. They guy told people winter here made him
depressed. Another family of immigrants I know of relocated
from Toronto to California also to seek a new life in good weather.

If financial security is not an issue and if the return of
Donald Trump to WH and mass shooting are no concern
a lot of Canadians would not hesitate to join our southern
neighbours.

250,000 immigration applications last month. 2 million backlog already in the pipe. Our points system.

Expected increase to Toronto is 150,000 per year alone.

Not feeling too worried, in another year with the state of the world we will be an oasis and the articles will be butching about increasing refugee numbers and not enough housing available.

my retirement plan was to live in canada 6 mths of the year and somewhere warm the other six months. I was going to build my own house off grid by myself, homestead, grow food and build things.

now Im not very sure about this plan any more. rising taxes on property a based on an assessment of a government agency. ummm no thanks. I look at my current property tax bill and the costs associated with a house and you almost need to work to cover the costs plus your nest egg. to me this makes no sense at all.

I can move to thailand, philippines, and many other countries in either south america, southern europe, asian, and I could go on. some of them have great health care, internet, feminine women, lady boys, great food and culture. its doesnt add up financial and for quality of life. live in a nice condo for almost the same Im paying for my property tax.

like I said Im on the fence. I interested in seeing what happens when the next federal election and to see if any real change will occur to sway me either way off the fence.

I will retire in mexico or portugal if it remains affordable.

If it wasn't for my 2 kids who are teens I would already be there...

Australian climate I'm not a fan of, and New Zealand likely doesn't have the job opportunities I'm looking for. I figure I could relocate to the States and continue to work within the organization I'm currently invested in. But the U.S. definitely has its own set of issues too.

Because they do not assess cost of living. All is perfectly fine in Switzerland when you have millions of dollars ;)
They do consider cost of living, you just make more in those countries as well.
We might not make as much here, and housing and a few other things are more expensive but that's offset by freeish health care and general safety.

I wouldn't buy. You never know when a change in govt can take it away. And dealing with the estate after you are gone can be a bitch. Better to rent. That way if you decide after a few years you want something different its a lot easier to do it.

I plan to lose the house and down size both to a condo and a smaller city. Staying in Ontario. London looks good. Best hospital in Canada, condos in the 300,000 range, transit, 2 hours to Toronto, 2 hours to the border, close to beaches like Grand Bend.

It may change location wise but thats the idea.

makes sense. comparatively you will get more bang for your buck in london. the problem is regardless of downsizing the government will always exponentially increase the taxes on your property, your income and the products you buy.

overtime its a loosing scenario and will eat away at your nest egg.

as a non resident you would have to pay a withholding tax depending on the tax treaty you have with the country you live in. you can still get your cpp and oas in another country. property taxes probably none to minimal. taxes on the products you buy, little to none. a low cost of living that is based on what the native inhabitants pay.

its makes more dollars to me not to stay, but to each their own.
