AM/FM CD HOOKUP Questions

Had the old radio stolen from vehicle.

They took the removeable front plate ( I know I should have taken it out) as well as the back metal frame. They were nice enough to unplug it so I do have the connectors in decent shape.

Am I able to pick up any model of radio to replace it. Will wiring be the same? It seems to have ONE main connector with all sorts of wires going to it.

I trust this 7 year old connector will not fit a new Am/FM Cd Changer.

Is it an easy task to switch in a NEW CONNECTOR?

ANY ADVICE?

pretty easy. Any place that sells radios/haed units can sell you the wiring harness that goes with your car to match the wires of the new unit. By using this "adapter", which are usually cheap, you will have no problems.

Sorry

Actually Its a boat.

There seems to ONLY be one connector in back.

Are you saying all these wires can be removed and put into the new connector.

Or there would be an adaptor to match the old connector to the new radio??

yes, the harness will have wires that match up and then plug into your new radio.

way out in left field
it all depends on the connector attached to the boat's wiring harness. If it came from the factory the connector is probably unique to the type of radio that came with the boat. I know boat makers will strike a deal with panasonic or whomever and put that into all their boats and the back connector will be integrated into the wiring harness.

What kind of radio was stolen? (make and or model). Was it a marine radio or a regular am/fm/cd in a waterproof housing?

It is relatively easy to install a radio.
You basically have:
Power (continuous)
Ground
Ignition (temporary power)
2 wires for each of 4 speakers: front right front left rear right rear left
power signal (to turn on amplifiers etc)

Red is pretty much always battery continuous power
Red with a white stripe is pretty much always ignition or switched power
Green is always ground
power signal is typically blue with a white stripe

Speakers are usually done in pairs:

For eg: front right would be purple for positive and purple with a white stripe for neg. Yellow, yellow with a stripe etc etc.

it is easy to tell which wire is for which speaker because they are usually paired together and all you have to do is briefly touch them to a 9v radio battery and listen for the clicks.

Since this is a marine application I don't think any oem harness adapter will be out there because there just isn't the market for them.....

Great response...

The radio was a Clarion.

7 years old.

I think the speaker wires...all paired...are ALL GREY.

And there seemes to be only ONE ADAPTOR taking all the wires...and into the back of the radio.

The radio is completely housed inside the cabin by the galley...so I AM TOLD...any radio should work...not necessary to get marine standards...although I am still debating that.

So your saying I should be able to TRANSFER all the wires...(speakers, ground, battery) etc to a new adaptor and PLUG AND PLAY???

thx

this seems to be going in circles.

GO to Futureshack, Best Buy, etc. and tell them you want a radio and adapter. The instructions are on the package and the salesperson can tell you exactly how to hook up your model.

Once you SEE the adapter and diagram, it will all make sense to you.
