Holy Shit, Shack. Did you go see Bing Crosby movies at the theater on Saturdays when you were in School? I think Latin went out with the Romans.Or as we used to say in Latin class in high school:
semper (always) ubi (where) sub (under) ubi (where).
What can I say? It was offered at my school into the 70's. Unfortunately, I had to drop Latin prior to grade 13. I had to choose between Latin and French and chose French.Holy Shit, Shack. "Ubi est Britannia? Britannia est insula. Amo, amas, amat," etc. What can I say? It was offered at my school into the 70's. Unfortunately, I had to drop Latin prior to grade 13. I had to choose between Latin and French and chose French.
Aside from that phrase the only other thing I remember from Latin class is the derivation of the word "sincere".
There was a product (I forget what it was) that could be made either with or without wax, the one with wax being superior. However, to the naked eye it was not discernable which was which. So if he was selling the inferior one, a shopkeeper who was honest would put up a sign saying "sine cere" or without wax to let shoppers know. He was therefore honest or sincere.
So, indeed, it is a dead language but it is the basis of all the Romantic languages and much can still be learned by it's study.
I am a huge fan of Ken Finkleman's TV series'."Ubi est Britannia? Britannia est insula. Amo, amas, amat," etc.
Yeah I took Latin in Grade 11 at Kelvin T. H.S in Winnipeg.
I was terrible at languages, and used to cheat by having the textbook open on my lap during class tests. My buddy Ken Finkleman (who wrote and directed the movie "Airplane II - The Sequel", and created and acted in the great and amusing CBC TV series "The Newsroom") sat beside me in class and would get his jollies by flipping my textbook off my lap onto the floor. The teacher was pretty old and didn't even notice. I don't remember the teacher's name but at least once a year he would sing "Flin Flon Flossie" for us...
