Based on this, it would appear that a goal can be scored directly from a kick off. However, I think it could have been disallowed on the basis that the team that scored the goal had a player in the defending teams half when the ball was kicked. My understanding is that on a kick off, all players on the team kicking off must be behind the half way line in their own half. Referees are pretty lax on this and allow them to stand over the line.
