There was an experiment done in South Africa where people actually worked harder and used the extra money to, say, start businesses (I'll find the link later). But, of course, their circumstances are very different than ours and I can see why they were motivated rather just sit around and do nothing.

For UBI to work right now it would need to be a supplement to one's income and not a substitute/replacement for a living wage. Thus, you would still need to work. For instance, you'd get, say, $500 a month in UBI. Then, would some people just work fewer hours now because they're getting $500 in UBI? I'm sure there would be some, but I'm inclined to think people would continue to work like they have been (maybe for those who needed to work two jobs to live would quit or work less in the 2nd job; improving quality of life) and the hope is people use that additional time/money productively (start a business; save and invest; learn a new skill/trade, etc.). But, some people may just spend the additional dough on strippers and escorts, lol.

Automation is a big threat and those in tech esp know this. This is why guys like Musk and Zuckerberg have said UBI in some form should be explored/experimented, as others have already mentioned. In the end, companies want to minimize labour costs (e.g., the prevelance of self-checkouts).

That's why right now I think computer science/engineering (people devloping this stuff) and trades (plumbers, electricians, etc.) are the way to go, esp if you're young; IMO, it's going to be long time before trades are automated, if ever (but never say never).

You are only saying that because you don't want to "work" anymore.
No. I'm saying this because I know people that have physical disabilities. The cheque they get every month to survive is 1100$ they can't afford food so they depend on a food bank,He has to pay 850 to rent a room which he needs a one bedroom and that leaves 250 for him 100 goes to his phone and internet that leaves 150 and im sure you think its ok to live off 150 a month right?

Receiving your OAS pension outside of Canada
You can qualify to receive Old Age Security pension payments while living outside of Canada if one if these reasons applies to you:

  • you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after turning 18
  • you lived and worked in a country that has a social security agreement with Canada. The time you lived or worked in that country and Canada must be at least 20 years
If you do not qualify to receive your Old Age Security pension while outside of Canada, your payments will stop if you are out of the country for more than 6 months after the month you left.

You cannot collect the Guaranteed Income Supplement if you are outside Canada for more than 6 months.
I stand corrected, regardless if you have lived in canada for 20 years o e qould hope that you ha e contributed enough to thw canadian society to deserve it.... aince CPP is a joke and anyo e relaying on it for pension might as well be living on the street.

TD Bank is looking to hire 2,000 IT folks.

Our problem in Canada is that our colleges/universities don't produce graduates who can build and fix stuff. I once sold a bike to a young college student. Gave her a free bell. She asked: "How do I install this thing?" I said you need a screwdriver. She asked: 'What is a screwdriver?"

agree ...there needs to be an emphasis that it's ok to get into trades/do blue-collar work even though it's manual labour ..not to mention they can pay very well (plumbers and electricians can ding you some good coin to fix something that took only 5 minutes , for instance ) ...but not sure if that would really change anything

a lot of people do wanna work white-collar jobs ...dress in fancy suits , network, climb the corporate ladder, etc

I would agree that all people should have universal basic income and would be willing to provide money buy paying lot more taxes as long as everyone would also agree that old wealthy dudes should be able to have sex with 20 year old girls and these girls will provide such sex on demand. Until they require money for sex, I would prefer to keep my money to pay for their services, not to give it away for nothing. After all, why wealthy people should give away money to everyone but sexy girls do not have to give away sex to everyone?

veryone in a society — rich or poor — gets a monthly cheque for the same amount. At the end of the year, the government uses the tax system to balance out the scales and recoup that extra cash from the higher income earners who didn't end up needing it.-sounds good to me
it will never happen in a large capitalist system. the Rich will continue to get rich and the poor will stay poor. firstly inequality drives competition the middle class the poor and the working poor are pitted against each other and you function as the labor force of the owners of capital. a single Ontarian currently get 733 dollars for welfare monthly. tell me in this housing market where you can find a one bedroom apartment for 600 bucks you cant. so you will likely rent a room for 400 and up. in some instances an individual will spend 600 to rent a room leaving 133 dollars to pay for food transportation etc.
who can live on that however it is the maximum available for a single person. if you break down this government income to the individual every single penny has gone right back into the economy. lets look at a homeowner who has a secondary property serving as a rental income stream. the said homeowner has a ready supply of renters who for a myriad of reasons are on welfare. the homeowner benefits from ridiculously low interest rates precipitated by ultra lose central bank monetary policy and government stimulus land use restrictions low housing inventory and immigration. Homeowners property increased in value across Canada by 26.6 percent in 2021. there's s simply not enough government owned housing to accommodate the poor there situation sustains rental property owners be them corporations or individual homeowners as it pertains to rent and capital appreciation of there property. add to this our current economic situation of massive inflationary pressures driving up the cost of essential food for anyone on welfare while the amount you receive remains fixed at $733. the cost of every product from chicken rice wheat etc, has gone up eroding an individuals nutritional intake while forcing them to sacrifice already meager necessities.

For the middle class -the upper middle class and the rich your going to ask them to adopt UBI good luck. within capitalism ambition greed and a desire to attain material wealth and prosperity is a powerful driving force which inherently manifest competition remove it and some other distorted form of unequal wealth accumulation will take its place. even in the most homogenous society such as japan you have wealth inequality. UBI has zero chance. under capitalism the concept that my hard work has earned me this is the epitome of selfishness self-worth and success don't ask anyone to peacefully give that up NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
