In a place far, far away
Always a pleasure to have your meal ruined by having kids running and screaming all over the place. Even more pleasant when the wait staff has to spending a half hour cleaning up the mess they leave behind.

A restaurant is banning kids under 10 after 'crazy messes': Do you agree with them?
Should kids under 10 be banned from dining out? Nettie's House of Spaghetti thinks so.

Planning a dinner out with the family? Then you'll want to avoid Nettie's House of Spaghetti — which recently decided to ban kids under 10.

The restaurant, located in Tinton Falls, N.J., divided social media when they announced that they would no longer be welcoming diners under 10 years old. The policy comes into place as of March 8, which they detailed in a Facebook post.

"We love kids. We really, truly, do. But lately, it’s been extremely challenging to accommodate children at Nettie’s. Between noise levels, lack of space for high chairs, cleaning up crazy messes, and the liability of kids running around the restaurant, we have decided that it’s time to take control of the situation," they shared.

"This wasn’t a decision that was made lightly, but some recent events have pushed us to implement this new policy...We know that this is going to make some of you very upset, especially those of you with very well-behaved kids, but we believe this is the right decision for our business moving forward."

The social media post has been shared more than 10,000 times, and garnered plenty of outcry from locals.

"Nobody likes misbehaved kids (barbarism begins at the home!), especially while dining. But this might be harsh…" one Facebook user wrote.

"That is really sad to hear... I was looking forward to trying out your place but with a well behaved 9-year-old I’m not welcome... sad," added another.

Others were supportive of the decision, including a woman who says she has worked in the restaurant industry since the age of 14.

"Kids are out of control and most parents are oblivious. The disregard for manners and common decency is unreal," she wrote. "Good for you for taking a stand."

"Support you 100 per cent. Good food deserves a good atmosphere," shared another.

The debate also made its way to Twitter, where users shared their thoughts on the restaurant's decision.

"I love the idea of no kids. I just don’t think Nettie’s House of Spaghetti is going to be super popular with the 18+ crowd," shared one user.

"They need to change their name to something more pretentious, like 'Sauce,' or 'Il Bistro di Netti.' People were bringing kids because it's named like a family place," shared another.

"I would definitely eat there, I don't hate kids, I just dislike parents who refuse to parent," one person wrote.

"More restaurants should do the same. I’ve had many a meal ruined by noisy, messy children. Take your sprogs to ChuckECheese," another commented.

Guess I’m heading to Tinton Falls, N.J!!!

This is brilliant.

I can understand this too. Pasta is like the worst food to clean up. I can see messy kids, completely Horribly behaved children. I support this. I wish more airlines, buses and train lines would do this.

and this line - bullshit

You gotta love people who magically were going to go but now they are not. Total bullshit.

OP you should set up a poll for this.

My answer is definitely yes! Nothing worse than going out for a nice meal and being seated beside a table with kids yelling and screaming.

However I wouldn’t say a spaghetti restaurant like The Spaghetti Factory would be successful if it did have a ban on kids. .

When my kids were young eating at home was practice for when we went out for dinner and always had good table manners and did not act out. Unfortunately there are other parents in this world who seem to think that their kids can do whatever they want whenever they want no matter who it bothers.

I’m all for it.

It’s their business and they can experiment with this if they want. Promote it well and see who wins out, It would sure make me more likely to dine there.

Let me know when you’ve got time to meet me there for dinner Jenesis, we’ll share a bottle of Chianti :)

Yah I'm not in favour of that but a restaurant will do what they view as best for the business

Thankfully I go to family friendly establishments

There should be a separate section for parents with unruly kids.
They can do whatever they like and not bother the other paying guests who want to enjoy a nice quiet dinner.

I think this is more a response to stupid parents who don't teach their children how to behave in public, or eat a meal with manners. I really don't care one way or the other, to be honest. I will say, that in my experience, I've never had a meal ruined by kids doing stupid shit. Now, I can't comment on the clean up after they leave, so who knows how bad that might be...

They don't need to do that . Just have a policy in place that children must behave to the same standard as adults, and parents will be responsible for their behaviour and mess.

Note, I am talking about children, not toddlers/babies.

Children have to, absolutely MUST know that they are not in charge. Parents' instructions are not suggestions, they are not to be approved of by the children or debated, or even questioned. That is certainly how I was raised. Kids do not need to know why everything is required. They can ask questions AFTER they have done it.

All it takes is consequences for disobedience that has been reinforced BEFORE going to the restaurant. How about at the family home dinner table?

In fact, how about AWAYS having family meals together? Yeah, around the table, Norman Rockwell style. Not everyone grabbing something and going off to do their own thing. Make it formal., you all sit at the table waiting for the food to come, not allowed to get up and run around, or talk loudly or yell. You can't leave when you want.

It works.

Agree 100%. I would pay extra for childless flights too, and no, I do not hate kids. The problem is some kids scream their head off for no apparent reason and the parents do nothing about it.

I like my quiet, end of story. I avoid family style restaurants and resorts for that reason and there should be places where adults can go where there is a guarantee of no children.

What, if anything, can actually be done about it? What do you propose a parent should do to eradicate this disturbing behaviour?

It starts at home. Parents use electronics, schools and TV as baby sitters then feel guilty about not spending enough time with them so they compensate by letting the kids go wild. The worst is when the parents get all defensive when people didn't actually raiseabout the little brats they actually didn't raise.

You didn't provide any actual measures that can be taken by parents to stop a screaming child from screaming on an airplane.

In many countries there is usually a "family section", where people with kids etc dine in, while the rest of them dine in the main restaurant section. Maybe instead of banning kids, setting up a family section is a good idea.

I eat out at restaurants fairly often and I can’t recall any times when I saw kids causing that much of a problem.

I dunno…I think it’s unfortunate the restaurant feels like it needs to do this.

Although I find noisy & whiny kids a good way to ruin a meal, If it's a family restaurant then no I disagree with what they're doing. But any mess and noise caused by the kids is the fault of the parents and not the kids. Besides who the heck would let kids under 10 order spaghetti which can be one of the messiest foods to eat even for adults.
I suspect their decision may come back and hurt their bottom line.
