RIP Melvin Edmonds

Babyface's older brother died on Saturday after a brief illness. He was 65. One of the founding members of the group After 7 along with his brother Kevon. They had a string of hits in the early to mid 90's this was their first from their self titled debut album

Melvin really shone on this track. From their album Takin My Time 1992.

Still sad over the death of Melvin Edmonds I've been listening to After 7 quite a bit this past week or so. He really had a vocal tone that was a throwback to the 70's. God Bless Him.

25th Anniversary of Release

On March 8, 1994 Gang Starr released their 4th (and in my opinion their best) studio album Hard To Earn. Mass Appeal is the most recognizable song from the album but this one was probably my favorite. It was featured in the film White Men Can't Jump and I remember hearing it on an episode of Law & Order years ago.

25th Anniversary album pt 2. Nas' debut album Illmatic was released on April 19, 1994. Often ranked as the greatest hip hop album ever recorded it featured notable producers DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Large Professor.

The Sun Rises In The East

May 24, 1994 saw the release of rapper Jeru The Damaja's debut album. Produced entirely by DJ Premier of Gang Starr this album is a favorite of the underground hip hop fandom.

The Neptunes are a mostly R&B/Hip Hop production duo consisting of Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. Pharrell is also a singer whose had hits with Happy, Frontin' and Can I Have It Like That. They were at their peak during the early 2000's when almost everything they touched turned to gold. They definitely have a signature sound of heavy synth that often sounds futuristic mixed with short punchy drum beats.

They've definitely had some pop success with Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke. But my preference are their r&b and hip hop production credits. With that I'll count down my top 10 Neptunes beats of all time.
