These guys were labeled as being synth-pop but no doubt there is an element of R&B/soul/funk in their sound. Makes sense because the two members met while working for the disco-funk band Kleeer in the early 80's. The System's most recognizable song was "Don't Disturb This Groove" which hit #1 on the R&B charts and #4 on the Pop charts in 1987. But they had some moderate success with other songs like this one

"This Is For You" (1985)

This is Terrence Trent D'Arby's first television appearance, on the UK Channel 4 music series The Tube, in 1987. D'Arby legally changed his name to Sananda Francesco Maitreya in 2001.

He has some truly amazing dance moves at the beginning of the song.

I have a better copy of this performance on The Best of The Tube, but this is already on YouTube.

I just finished watching "Disco's Revenge" on Crave. Follows the evolution of disco from the underground Brooklyn and New York City clubs of the late 60's through the breakout of disco in the early to late 70's, through to the beginnings of rap and "house", until disco's eventual decline.

A lot of Nile Rogers and some famous NYC DJ's, s well as some early disco artists. Worthwhile and nostalgic for those who loved the era.

Ogi, I know you're a James Carr fan. I saw this song mentioned in a recent issue of Record Collector magazine out of Britain.

Not sure if you posted it before. Anyways it keeps building all the way to the end, Otis Redding style...

I've always said that music quality took a sharp turn downwards post 2010. I know ogibowt and xmontrealer would say its much sooner than that, but for me that's about the time both r&b and hip hop started to have way more misses than hits. There are some exceptions to that and this is one. This made the rounds on the blend mix tapes around 2010/2011. Miguel was a new artist debuting in 2010 and man it was solid. This is from his first LP, featuring J. Cole rapping and produced by Salaam Remi who produced a lot of Nas joints, the most notable being "Made You Look".

"All I Want is You" Miguel feat. J. Cole

Miguel's next album came out in 2012 entitled "Kaleidoscope Dream". It featured his most successful single "Adorn" which won a Grammy in 2013 as best R&B song. |It also featured this tidy little banger, also produced by Remi.

"How Many Drinks" feat. Kendrick Lamar

Some new hip hop which I gotta admit, speaks to me. Mostly the DJ Premier production not a big fan of Roc Marciano.
