this title reminded me of this Etta James tune
for Eddie, because i know he is an Etta fan

Ogi I thought you disappeared...

Was Motown too "Northern", produced, and up tempo for your tastes, as compared to Stax, Atlantic, and other more deep and gritty soul labels?

In any case my Motown posts will be done in a few more days. :geek:

X...ive done some thinking on this.........there is an irony to all this.......Motown was started by a black guy with primarily black musicians and writers who. imo sought a wider white audience.....while Stax was started by a white guy and Atlantic was the brain child of a jewish guy...and both labels had a liberal sprinkling of white musicians and song writers....trying to appeal to a wider black audience as well as white..................and the record label Fame was headed by a white guy named Rick Hall

Absolutely. Barry Gordy Jr's dream was to create music with mainstream pop appeal, that would appeal to all, and have his acts headline in Vegas and other upscale "white" venues as well as traditionally Black ones.
Hence their motto "The Sound Of Young America".

Stax, Atlantic, Hi, and Fame, etc. were more directly Black oriented, with crossover hits not being the primary goal.

Chess was started by Jewish Polish immigrants Leonard & Phil Chess, in 1950, with both r&b and blues hit artists. Their prime focus was a Black audience, though their early rock & roll artists such as Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry were major crossovers. Leonard was reputed to be hard on both his family and his musicians, and at one point had to be sued by some Chess artists for royalties that had not been paid to them.
