When David recorded this around the same time as The Jackson Five, Barry Gordy Jr., the President of Motown preferred Michael's version, and David's version was put on the shelf until the 1990's, when it was finally released on the "David" album. David singing his ass off, only to have his version be put on hold for 30 years...
Motown was huge in the British soul clubs.
These "oldsters" started doing this in their teens, and obviously still love it...
