Ten years ago today hip hop lost one of its early pioneers. Dwight Arrington Myers aka Heavy D was from 'Money Earnin" Mount Vernon, a suburb of NYC. He broke out on the scene in 1987 co-founding the group Heavy D & The Boyz, with DJ Eddie F who handled the DJ and production duties.
Heavy D will forever go down as one of my favorite rappers. He put out party rap joints mostly, often crossing over with r&b sounds. Their 1st single was 'Mr. Big Stuff' a hip hop remake of Jean Knight's 1971 soul hit of the same name. But the best track on their debut album was this one
The Overweight Lover's in the House
Contains a sample of 3 different James Brown songs, the most notable being Hot Pants.
The groups second album, Big Tyme, was released in 1989 and I consider it to be their best. This was my favorite song from it
Flexin'
Heavy D and the Boyz would go on to release 3 more albums. In 1997 he released his first solo album, Waterbed Hev, which has a distinctive r&b club flavor to it. This was the jam for me
Heavy D also had an eye for talent. He developed and produced the r&b boy band Soul For Real who scored platinum with their debut album 'Candy Rain'
Gone way too soon. RIP.
