Why did I think it is much higher? Is it because many Blacks are in "high visibility" fields like sports and entertainment (I don't have the guts to mention crime)?
Only 2.5% of Canadian population is black.

You are a warm-hearted person for caring about the deaths of so many Americans. Your efforts however would be better put to use in trying to end the 443 000 American deaths every year, from smoking. Your million dead from guns over the past 40 years will be reached in 2 - 3 years for smoking. If you are truly such a caring person, you would tackle this big problem first, then worry about cleaning up the less deadly problems like gun deaths and car accidents and suicides and other types of cancer and drowning etc, once you've saved those unfortunate 443 000 smokers. Good luck!!

The difference smoking kills the smoker, guns kill someone else, but who thought it was necessary to point out the obvious.

Under 0.0037 percent of the U.S. population is murdered by firearm.
Over 98% of the U.S. population doesn't die!!!

While Aardvark's technique generates numbers, the statistical calculation is highly misleading. It can be read to imply 98% of the U.S. population is immortal.

Rather that over 99 percent of the U.S. population is not murdered by fire arm each year.

…edit…those [deaths] involving firearms generally involve illegal firearms.
I couldn't find where in this thread, you got numerical about that assertion. Could you please. What sort of percentage should we be reading that "generally" of yours to mean?

It's hard to beleve that American streets really are so lawless that generally, or almost all—like say 90%—of gun-killings are done by outlaws using guns they stole or smuggled. Not when legal purchase is relatively easy in many places. Or that cuckholded husbands, jealous wives and bitter children using legal guns and such account for so few deaths. Assuming of course that your sources defined 'generally' so high. Where did they put that line, in numbers of deaths?

Of course we could define an illegal gun as 'any gun not where it was legally supposed to be'. That would make the gun used here in the Brass Rail killing an illegal one even though its owner was licensed and had properly purchased and registered it. We could even define it as 'any gun used in an illegal act' and turn that "generally" of yours into 'universally'.

Like the phony cant that guns are harmless and only bad people kill; stats—when you provide them—have little to do with the real question. How to stop gun deaths. Answer: no guns. That, however isn't this thread's topic: statistics are, and we're waiting for yours.

All illegal guns started out life at legal guns. Legal guns are quite literally the source of the problem.

Unless anyone believes there are illegal gun factories out there churning out weapons that are illegal the day they were made the conclusion is inescapable: The system of legally distributed guns is also ultimately supplying the illegal market as well. I guarantee you that the gun manufacturers earned a profit on the production and sale of every illegal gun in circulation.

There are a variety of mechanisms by which this happens. Theft is a common one, but note that when legal guns are proliferated more broadly there are many, many more opportunities for gun theft. Another is diversion from the supply chain, by shady distributors or gun stores.

In any case, the proliferation of legal guns is directly linked to the proliferation of illegal ones.

One million Americans have been killed by guns in the last 42 years
To quote Archie Bunker: "Would you feel better if they had been pushed out of windows"??
